Question about owning at different resorts

Ok new to this so bear with me. Just curious as to why people own at 2 different resorts, besides liking them so much.

For example, if you have 50 points at BWV and 150 at SSR and you can't take those SSR points to stay at BWV then I guess I don't understand? Or is there a way to do that and I just don't get it?

Just curious as to why owning at 2 different places and if there is a way to use one resorts points at another if you own so few at one?

Eventually we may want to add-on and would like to know methods behind the madness :teeth:

We have 300 points at OKW, 100 at VWL and 100 at BCV. Our 100 point contracts give us 300 points between banking, using and borrowing. So if we want to make sure we get that VWL one bedroom for Christmas and New Years, we can make that reservation at 11 months. If we want to get BCV during Food & Wine or summer time (got to have SAB for the hubby and son), we have 300 points to use there as well.

I'm sure there are tons of reasons why many DVC members own 2 different resorts but here are two of mine, 1) home resort advantage. if you must travel during DVC peak season, it's a big plus to make reservation at 11 months out and 2) good deals are hard to pass up.

So let me see if I follow you. We currently own 180 at SSR. Say we add on to VWL because we like it. So we will use 2005, 06 and 07 for examples. As long as we don't mind staying at SSR in 05 and 07 we could use all of those 3 years to switch it up and stay at VWL in 06, yes?

Not sure if I understand you.

I have 100 points at VWL. Say I banked last year's points. I can use them (100), plus this year's points (100) and borrow next year's points (100) and have a total of 300 VWL points to make a single reservation. I could do this every three years if I wanted to.

I haven't used my OKW or BCV points at all for this reservation.

Sometimes, we want to stay at one of these two resorts (VWL or BCV) where we only have 100 points and we did not have banked points. So we used the current year points, plus borrowed from next year to get 200 points. Then we made as many nights as possible with those 200 points. The rest of the nights will be made at OKW with those points (the other 300 current year points). When the 7 month period comes, we see if we can change our reservation at OKW for the additional nights we need at VWL or BCV.

For example, we get NYE, NYDay, the day after and maybe the next (four days) at VWL or BCV. Then the next three days at OKW. Come 7 months we call MS to see if those three days (that we have OKW reservations) are available at VWL or BCV. If they are, we use the OKW points to reserve the last three days at VWL or BCV. Plus, since VWL and BCV use more points than OKW we have to add points to the reservation.

There is a lengthy thread about this that was active until about 2 weeks ago. Search under "What is the benefit of owning multiple contracts" and you should find it. Sorry...I don't know how to post the link to the thread here.

The home resort, 11 month advantage has been fully discussed, I'm not sure if this has been clearly stated. You can use your points from any resort to make reservations at the 7 month mark. I own at three different resorts, one of which I've never stayed at (BCV). But if I make a reservation at 7 months or less, I can use those points at any of the DVC resorts.

We own at BCV solely for the 11 month reservation advantage.

sometimes the 11month is necessary - Dec 1-14, food/wine festavial.

so I own at VWL and BWV - just enough for a studio.

I love OKW and most of the time I am very happy staying there.

but I like to change - too bad the time I like to change are very popular - so I learned along ago to get a studio at VWL in early Dec you need to own there - same for BWV.

I am very mathmatically challenged so the whole point thing is very difficult for me. Some of the threads I read about points really knot up my brain. Having said that, I phrased a question I have about points that I think can be answered with a yes or no - no numbers involved. OK, ready, here it is:

If you own points at two resorts, can you use the 11th month window to book at one resort, and use points from the other resort for this reservation if you need them?

Anyone up for a challenge???? ;)

no

you can only use the points from the other resort at the 7th time.

you can bank and borrow

Cobbler, you CAN use one resort's points to stay at another, as long as you don't make the reservation more than seven months out. Here's an example, based on my usage last year. I used my Hilton Head points to stay at HH, and booked that trip at the eleven month mark. But I also own points at BCV, and I used some of them at BCV and some of them for a last minute trip at POR (not even a DVC resort, that's how "last minute" it was!) So you can only use a resort's points at that resort from eleven to eight months in advance - at the seven month mark, all points can be pooled together, no matter what the home resort is, for a stay anywhere (depending on availability, of course!!)

Does that help any????

So if I understand this, most of you have multiple contracts for the 11 month reservation time. Is it really that difficult to get a reservation at 7 months?

THAT, I understand! ::yes::
Thank you sooo much.

Our reason was that the resorts we purchased at had teh best incentive at that time. We had our original documents in 01 for VWL then our guide called us and asked if we would like to save some money and offered us a deal at HHI that we couldn't say no to. Same with VB and our SSR add on. It wasn't about the resort but the incentives offered to us that made our decisions easy.
