Question about naming twins

I used to date a twin - him and his brother were Robert Richard and Richard Robert. I said gee your Mom couldn't come up with four names? He didn't think it was funny as I recall.

In High School there were these girl twins and they were named Harmony and Melody :crazy2:
and i think it is possible they were both in Band as well.
it was very gag me at the time.

Ella, of the 27 grandchildren born to my parents, only one set of twins, and they are fraternal twins, girls. Fraternal twins run in my SIL's family, and its only fraternal twins that are hereditary. The fact that my mother had 3 sets of identical twins was a fluke, since identical twins are not hereditary. My grandmother was also an identical twin though, so I guess flukes run in our family. :p

I gotta tell you though, I was so big with my first one, I fully accepted the fact that I was having twins. I prepared my husband for it, and we pretty much went into the first sonogram thinking it was 2. We were really surprised when it was just the one.

snoopy, that is just amazing. my god, I have a 2 year old and (as of today!) 5 month old twins. I can't even imagine having any more kids, let alone 2 more sets of twins. your mom must be an amazing woman.

curious if your brothers or sister had twins. fraternal twins are the ones that are passed down, but still.

My mother was an amazing woman, thanks. :) Certainly the type of woman meant to have 9 children in the span of 13 years. :) Very patient and loving and "team oriented", as was my father. Both are gone now, I miss them so much. :(

I think we must have been posting at the same time, read upthread -- only one set of twins in the next generation, and they are fraternal, coming from my SIL's side of the family.

My grandmother was Bernadette. Her sister was Bernadine.

One thing sort of funny about identical twins, is without fail, people always ask the mother or other family members how they tell the twins apart. And of course my mother always said she had no problems telling them apart, that they each had their own unique styles, etc., etc. Which was true when they got older, but what she DIDN'T tell people is when they were tiny infants she put a bandaid on one and not the other to let her know which was which. :p She used to joke that Nick was really Matt or Will was really Rob, that she got confused which one she put the bandaid on that day. :)

We always ASSUME she was kidding, that is. :p

I'm sorry your parents are no longer with you. seriously, it seems like most mothers of multiples have extra patience than others. I wish I had it, I always seem a little frazzled since I had them. Or maybe because they are still so young? I don't know.

my twins are b/g, so easy to tell them apart. funny though, people still ask me all the time if they are identical. LOL! ummm, no, there is at least one major difference. :)

LOL! Yeah, I'd say that difference is pretty major allright! :p

I always remember this girl down the street, she was a bossy little thing anyway, a lot like Angelica on Rugrats. She was unable to embrace the concept that my twin brothers were in fact two people. One day she was doling out gum that she had, giving a stick to me, then my friend, then she stopped at my twin brothers and gave them one stick, since of course they were only one person. :p

People are so silly sometimes.

twin gene skips a generation

I believe this is a myth.

Factors Affecting the Twinning Rate
Only fraternal twins tend to run in families.

Many people believe that twins "skip a generation." Twinning is passed on as a genetic trait and appears in the women only. If you are a female and your mother had fraternal twins, you would have an increased chance of having fraternal twins yourself. Your brothers would not have an increased chance of having fraternal twins themselves, but they may pass the genetic trait on to their daughters who would then have an increased chance of having twins. This makes it appear that twins skip a generation but the gene definitely doesn't skip a generation.

I have often wondered this.

We have a friend who is a twin. Identical twin boys - the first one out was named after the father - Albert John (same first name but different second name so he's not a Jr.) and the second was given no special family name at all - Erik.

I always thought is was kind of weird to give one twin the fathers name and not at least give the second twin the fathers middle name as his first. Funny thing is the first twin turned out to be the good twin and the second was always getting in trouble and having problems. I am sure some psychologist could have a field day with that one:rolleyes:

Seems that maybe they would have given both twins the fathers first name as middle names. I wonder how they decided which one got the father's name and which one got the very different name.

I think that multiple births are a very special thing. For some reason I always wanted twin boys (the funny thing is that I always wanted girls--three to be exact-- but for some reason twin boys sounded good to me. I ended up with 4 singlton births, one girl and three boys. Ha, serves me right!
