Question about Motion Sickness Sensitivities

Hey all,

I'm traveling in September with some folks that aren't going to be as able to hit all the rides with as much gusto as I am due to them being prone to motion sickness.

I'm lucky enough to not have to worry about such an issue, but want to be sensitive to my friends, obviously. Is there a product out there that you've used that has helped to curb the woozies after getting off a ride like Soarin? (M:S is out of the question in their mind, even the green).

Thanks so much!

I use Bonine. It is over the counter and in drug stores, supermarkets, Target and similar stores. I take it about half an hour before going on rides. I still don't go on Everest or Mission Space but I am fine on everything else. I hope you all have a great trip.

Edit: It should last for the whole day.

Absolutey LOVE SeaBands. Helped me conquer the coasters at Six Flags Great America! They are bracelets that work using acupressure. They also have a ginger gum to quell the woozies. Available at pretty much any drugstore in the Dramamine aisle.

Meclizine, the ingredient in over-the-counter Bonine, is great for motion sickness. It needs to be taken at least one hour before hitting the rides and should last all day. I used it for flights, cruises, rides, etc. It works great for me.

Soarin has very limited movement as I think it's just the screen your looking at that gives you that sensation so just tell them to close their eyes and that should help a lot.

I'm the same way, tried Dramamine and Bonine but both make me so drowsy it isn't worth it. (Plus you can't really have any alcohol with them if that's important). Hyland's natural motion sickness tabs were a little helpful to me at Dutch Wonderland in PA but I can't say I tried them long enough to give them the full thumbs up. They get great reviews on Amaon.

The thing with motion sickness is, there's not much you can do about it once you start feeling sick. Most OTC remedies are meant to prevent it in the first place. If your friends are prone to motion sickness, they probably have already tried a few things. Natural remedies include sea bands, preparations containing ginger (capsules, candied ginger, gum) and eating a green apple. There are oils you can behind your dad (can't remember the name). And there are drugs like Dramamine, which can cause drowsiness, and Bonine which is less likely to do so. Bonine is what I use for theme parks and cruises. Lastly, there is a prescription drug called the Scopolamine transdermal patch. Due to the possibility of severe side effects, it really should be considered a last resort.

Motioneaze. Liquid you put behind your ears. Be careful as Bonine and Dramamine, though less drowsy, can still make people (myself included) very groggy. They build in your system, so watch out about taking them multiple days.

I have noticed ore questions like these. Consensus seems to be there is no consensus on what will or will not work as it varies by person and what is effective for one may not be for another.

My daughter has it, but lately has not had issues. She is perfectly fine sitting something out. But Dramamine also woods for her in a pinch.

Folks tend to know what they are comfortable with. So the best way you can be sensitive is to not be pushy in trying to get them to do something they don't want to do. That includes suggesting remedies. You can aka out of curiosity as in "have you true anything that might help...?" Or whatever wording. But don't try to fix their problem as it can come across as you don't care that they may still get sick since not all remedies work for all people.

I hope that makes sense.

(For us, it is about prevention because once it comes on, there really isn't fixing it.)

I have severe motion sickness issues, can't even get on my DD's swing in the backyard :crazy2: Bonine is a life saver for me in the parks. I take 2 at breakfast each morning we're there, which is usually 8 days and have never had any drowsiness issues at all. YMMV. That said, even with 2 Bonine in my system, I still get motion sick on MS and Star Tours. No problem with Soarin, teacups, or any of the coasters.

My wife suffers from some mild motion sickness. We looked at using Dramamine at one point for a car ride through the mountains but chose not to because there was no conclusive result on it's effects when pregnant. After doing research we found some natural stuff from 1800homeopathy. They have one called Car Sickness that works wonders for all kinds of motion sickness. This stuff is 100% natural, does not interact with other medications, does not cause drowsiness and works well whether or not you take it as a preventative or once you feel queasy. My wife has not suffered at all since we started using it.

I used to be able to ride whatever whenever but after having my boys something changed in my inner ear or something! I worked for balance disorder specialist and he recommends everything that's been mentioned here if they want to try and ride things. My mom has vertigo that will have her bedridden and comes on by itself, she went ahead & got an Rx for the behind the ear patches for our upcoming trip and is bringing Sea Bands which is what I used last year. Mom is still planning to sit some rides out and we are just putting that in to our park plans. Here's to a great trip for all!

Meclizine.....super cheap.
I don't take it in the parks, I just know what rides I can't do.....pretty much Star Tours and teacups.
I use it on cruises. It does make me drowsy, so I take it at night. Once a day.

This might sound crazy, but the thing that's always "evened me out" after riding Mission: Space - Orange Team is beer.

I've always taken a half Dramamine pill and it's worked fine for me and not made me drowsy. I could have sworn they made a nondrowsy formula for it though.

There are 2 kinds.

1. Non Drowsy Dramamine contains meclizine, the same active ingredient in Bonine.
2. Non Drowsy Naturals Dramamine contains ginger.

The dramamine patch behind the ear works great. The USN gives it out to green sailors if requested till they get their sea legs.

I haven't found anything that works for me and I end up feeling bad the rest of the day. I just can't do anything that is simulated. My kids go on all those rides and I wait. If we aren't sure if something is simulated, the kids ride it first. The only roller coaster that bothers me is Space Mt. I ride it once and then sip a coke while the kids ride it again. I am very thankful that they understand and don't push me. I use to feel like I needed to be on everything with them and would feel bad the rest of the day. So don't push your friends. They know what they can handle and you don't want then to feel badly the rest of the day.
