Question about Milk Spoilage

I have been observing a phenomenon in regards to milk spoiling.

I buy half gallons in the clear/whitish plastic jug. I buy one of 2% and one of whole. I buy them on the same day, same brand, from the same store/same cooler. They have identical expiration dates. I bring them home and store them right next to each other in the fridge.

Recently, I have noticed that the whole milk is spoiling A LOT faster than the 2%. After I noticed it incidentally, I started paying attention. The last 3 milk purchases, the whole milk has been spoiled at least 2-3 days BEFORE its expiration date. The 2% is good for 2-3 days PAST its expiration date.

Is there some kind of scientific explanation for this, or do I just have a portal to the Twilight Zone in my fridge? :confused3

It is the cream in the whole milk that spoils faster. Carton wont spoil as fast as plastic jugs and if you keep them inside the fridge rather than the door that will help also.

I think it does have to do with the fat content...and 1% lasts even longer

Thank you so much!! I do keep them in the door; I will change that. I'll try the cartons too. I'm just tired of throwing out so much milk.

we never have milk around here long enough to spoil.

Obviously, this is the most logical explanation, Mal. It would certainly explain why I KNOW that something is in the fridge, take everything out and STILL can't find it, then when that thing begins to smell--voila, it's back!

:rotfl: Amy. I have the same thing happen in my pantry...except the cookies that keep disappearing never do return. DH insists someone breaks in during the day and eats the Chips Ahoy.

HEY! That person breaks into my house, too! :rotfl2: Darn cookie burglars.

Has anyone ever tried the Organic milk? We get whole milk, Organic, that stuff will last for weeks without spoiling -- what I want to know is what is up with that?

The reason (most) organic milk lasts longer is due to the pasturization process. There are different types/ways which companies pasturize milk. Organic milk is usually done with ultra-high temperature pasturization because most of it is sold nationwide and must travel further, as opposed to your local dairies which sell at your local supermarkets. UHT process is expensive, which is another reason why organic milk is more expensive. However, it is SO much better for you than other milk. Organic milk is extremely higher in the good omega-3 fatty acids; you know the ones that are linked to reducing heart disease and cancer.

I buy Horizons organic skim milk. Since it is "ultra-pasteurized" it lasts me a long time, like a month. I only drink my milk with ice and water (I know, gross) so it takes me a long time to go through a carton!

Yes, it costs a bit more, but I like that it is organic and the price is worth it since it doesn't ever spoil before I drink the entire carton...

Ok, I just found this thread but I buy Crowley 2% in the jug and it seems to last FOREVER! And, I put it on the door! :confused3
