Question about military draft

You uppity republicans sitting there in your warm homes not caring what is going on in the real hard world make me sick.
Hmmm, my Dh is a union electrician and I am a manicurist...uppity republicans? ...I don't think so. But we do live in the REAL WORLD and our home is warm, shame on us for living such a posh lifestyle....

wow, that is some quick backtracking. Now it is no longer that there will be no draft, it is that there will be no draft for Iraq.

Gee, what a surprise. Restating what's already been stated but with a little twist for plausible deniablity.

Remember how WMD's became WMD programs that became WMD plans that became WMD dreams which became "but he was a bad man".

My warm little spot has a two car garage. She can park her van in it if she wants.

P.S. You seem tense.

If selective service is so necessary as a security precaution, why aren't all 18 year olds required to register? Shouldn't we ask women to register as well? Or, perhaps, that would be a bad PR move for those who advocate war?

:( DH, a republican, is in Iraq right now, so that you can sit in your house and type what you want. I am in my warm house doing my best to help keep his spirits up and taking care of our kids.

I've read the same posts. The fact is, if we need a draft, there will be a draft. End of story.
Not so fast... We've "needed" major Social Security reform for about 15 years now. Everyone agrees with the notion, but nothing's been done, because it's a political third rail. I even doubt the proposals mentioned by Bush now will ever make it out of committee. The party that succeeds in initiating a draft is a dead man politically.

BibbidiBobbidiBOO, I saw a great bumper-sticker yesterday. It read:

My sister is in Iraq fighting - for you...
She wants you to vote for Bush - for HER!

As much as I admire the troops and their families (as I've stated on these boards a number of times) this sentiment is coersive. First, all military personel get the right to vote, so no one needs to vote "for" them. To suggest that a vote against Bush was a vote against troops is vile propaganda. To use their bravery to shill for votes for a man who shunned battle himself...not the way I want those from my family who served the military to be remembered.

You would be surprised though by how many people thought they would be doing US a favor by voting for Kerry! I told them NO, that is not the way the majority of the military feels. That bumper sticker gets the message over nicely. ;)

rcyannacci,

"Vile propaganda"??? Oh, please! It wasn't an effort to say that the guy's sister didn't have a vote. The President's military decisions have a direct impact on the lives of our military, the guy's sister (unless the brother is lying) feels that she would be better served if Bush was allowed to remain as Commander in Chief. The military supported Bush by a 3 to 1 margin.

Although not a draft, extending military service is happening. Reservist and National Guardsmen have had their tours of duty extended well beyond what they have been called up for. There are many Reservist and National Guardsmen that have been to Gulf I, Bosnia, Kosovo only to be called up for Gulf II. Of course that is their duty, but it is only going to last so long, as many are not re-upping. Unfortunately, many who are trying to leave the Reserves and Guard are having their duty extended are not being allowed to retire or leave the military. Soon it will be left to the regular branches of the military to serve on foreign soils in battle, as many of our troops in Iraq are weekend warriors, while much of the full time military remains in the states to do their specialized jobs. The next move would be to call up retired military back to active duty.

I know a few Guardsmen that have fought in Gulf I, Bosnia, Kosovo and Gulf II and think that there should be a limit as to how many times one is called up to fight in a war.

Hey, did you know that Kerry was in Vietnam?

And to suggest that he would have been a great CIC of our military based on his past experience with the VN war and actions afterward is just plain vile.

funny how you only recognize propaganda when it comes from the other side. You really need to try to open your mind a bit more, and get past all your kneejerk reactions.

Actually, it's a big CHEER because he's NOT the CIC.

Then why are you incapable of enjoying your victory without continuing to spew words like "vile". I honestly believe you would rather have the fight continue than accept and rejoice that you have won. Why is your victory so hollow? You won huge. The win should be enough to satisfy you. Why are you incapable of enjoying it unless you rub it in to the losers? And why are you being so shortsighted in not realizing that the pendulum always swings and what you reap, you sow?

you think you are in the drivers seat? Try this on for size. The red states take much more from the ferderal government that they give. The blue give more than they take.

Roe v Wade will be struck down in this term making abortion a state issue. It will be legal in blue states and illegal in red states.

At what point do Ca or NY think " what the heck do we need them for"?

So think about that while you encourage this devisiveness. And think about what has historically always led to downfalls.

Where exactly did I mention Kerry in either of my posts?

Edited to add: I wonder if a new drinking game might be in order. A shot everytime a Bushie puts words in a liberal's mouth in order to divert the discussion to an inane tangent.

lets have a little history lesson today folks...........

heres some info on the selective service.

President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which created the country's first peacetime draft and formally established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency.

From 1948 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means.

In 1973, the draft ended and the U.S. converted to an All-Volunteer military.

The registration requirement was suspended in April 1975. It was resumed again in 1980 by President Carter in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Registration continues today as a hedge against underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis.

so let me get this right, Carter resumed the selective service system...

wasnt Carter a dem?

I do really have to wonder exactly what Carter being a dem has to do with the fact that Bush promised no draft and he will break that promise.

so if you guys are all mistaken and there is a draft next year it is OK because the dems have had one in the past????? Personally I am worried that in just a few short days to "there will never be a draft" to making excuses for a draft.

FIK, just to help you out,go back and read what the OP was asking.

Could someone please tell me why then it was necessary for my two sons to register with the Selective Service when they turned 18. Failure to register disqualifies young men from government financial aid.

now me being the nice guy that i am, i posted the history of the selective service.

perhaps you could be so helpful in answering the OP'S questions?

Gosh, history is so fuzzy...

And who followed Carter...I was so young then, but wasn't it 8 years of Republican leadership...no wait, 12 years? And they didn't feel the need to suspend it?

Again, I still have the question I posted earlier- if our government is still committed to selective service as a security measure, then they should not flinch from including women. Only, if that happened, I bet a whole lot of Americans would suddenly be less committed.
