Question About Mattresses

We are looking for a new mattress and the more I look the more confused I get.

There are three main brands that I guess are the best??

Sealy, Serta, Simmons

We want comfort of course. We do not have back problems so I dont think posturpedic matters.

We are looking for the best but at a reasonable price of course.

The best bed I ever slept in was at Portifino Bay at Universal and I think it was a Sealy pillowtop. I checked Costco, The Bedding experts, American Matteress, The actual Sealy Co. and a few others.

Each company site names their mattresses different names i.e. Hampton Court, Allendale etc. makes it very confusing (we are not interested in the foam, novafoam or memory foam)

So can anyone recommend a mattress that they are very satisfied with and where can I find one doesn't cost a fortune?

TIA

All I can say is try it out several times!! We bought one a few years ago and thought was perfect but wasn't really thinking. It was on a box spring and we have a platform bed. This made a HUGE difference. We bought a pillow top and 3 years later is is finally better or maybe we adjusted to it?? Make sure you lay on it for a while in your natural sleep position, stomach, back side, etc.

hmm..I don't know if just trying it out in the store really helps much cuz you are only trying it for a few minutes and not the whole night.

I double checked where you live - and see youre in Chicago! ! :thumbsup2

I *just* got one - after being confused as much as you are.... Value City Furniture. Turns out (((shhhhhh!)))) their mattresses are made by a big-brand company, and labeled under a cheap-o name - and the price reflects it! :thumbsup2

I got a squishy pillow-top mattress for UNDER $600! ! ! :hyper:

One thougth: Call the Portifino and get the exact name of the mattresses they use (or, better yet, use this as an excuse for a quick trip!). Then talk to the bedding manager at wherever you like to shop. Even though they will sell with a different name, they have charts showing matching up the various flavors. If that's the best bed you ever slept in, get one.

OMG! CathrynRose, we were just at Value City and saw the pillow top mattresses that looked a lot like the more expensive sealy ones.

My husband thought they looked the same and I disagreed with him. :( Looks like I owe him an apology

Thanks for clearing that up I really appreciate it!

When I was mattress shopping, I found a website that listed the different names that the mattresses are sold under. Try a google search on mattress names or something like that.

I ended up with a Serta plush-top.

You'll have a tough time trying to do comparison shopping by model name. Each place either has their own label/name or sells an exclusive model to prevent you from doing just that. Mattress dealers are worse than car salesmen.

We are looking to replace our "sleep number" bed and I already have a headache trying to compare the brands, their names and the prices for each. I just know that we will pay a ransom if we could just get a good nights sleep. Right now we are looking at a Serta. Not trying to hijack the thread but I am following for info.

We bought our bed about a month ago. We spent months researching, testing, etc. and ended up buying from Original Mattress Company. We started looking at the Heavenly Bed from the Sheraton (tried it at the Swan--wonderful), but found the bed got many negative reviews from people who bought it. Apparently many people have issues with the pillowtop mattresses breaking down and leaving large body impressions. This happens with all the well-known makers. Some people experienced this in just a few months and were average weight individuals. What we really wanted was a mattress we could flip, flop and rotate as we wanted. These are hard to find and OMC is one of the few locations to find a 2-sided mattress. The mattress was also manufactured in our community, which was nice.

If you haven't bought a bed in a few years be prepared. These new ones are very thick and you may need to get some new, deep-pocket sheets. I'm a professed cheap-skate, but trust me when I say high thread count sheets are so worth the cost! Also, you will find some very pushy mattress sales people. We were able to revive our old mattress for a few months by getting a 2" memory foam topper from Overstock.com. We used this while we were researching and deciding what to buy.

EDIT: It is the Original Mattress Company--Not Original Mattress Factory. Sorry, have changed in message to be correct.

Just bought a new mattress and I agree its a nightmare.

Thankfully we have a locally owned furniture store locally where we have bought quite a few pieces from, so I felt okay getting there advice.

I wanted a serta european pillow topper, what i ended up with is a united sleep pillow topper- same matress different brand.

it's huge, i almost have to climb up onto it, its comfy and it was about $600 less than the serta I wanted and so far, its wicked!!!
