We are in the process (really close!) of becoming members of DVC and have a question about the lock-off rooms. Could someone explain how they work and are they available for one and two bedroom?

A Lock off room is a Studio room and a One Bedroom unit next to eachother, with a door that separates the two units. Each room has its own entry from the outside hallway. There will also be an extra mini frig, microwave...everything you'd get in a studio, because you will be in a studio and a 1 bedroom unit.

A Dedicated 2 bedroom is a unit where there is only one entry from the outside hallway. There is no extra frig or microwave in the 2nd bedroom.

There are also differences in the beds in each of the Studio's as well, some have 2 beds, others have a pull out and a bed. Ask if you need specific arrangements when making reservations. There are times when you may not be able to get exactly what you want.

A lock-off room is a room style with multiple key-accessed doors (entry) and a lockable interior door used to create two smaller units from the one larger unit type. As far as I know, DVC lock-offs are always 2BR units with the lockable interior door creating separate 1BR and studio portions.

Not all DVC resorts offer lock-offs: BWV does, SSR does not.

Possible impacts of Lock-offs:
  • Noise. It is very possible that one might hear more noises from the next unit through a lock-off doorway than if a wall were there instead.
  • Separated charges. If sharing a 2BR lock-off unit with another couple, each couple may have their own credit card linked to their door key. (This is not offered if sharing a dedicated 2BR unit.)

Studios in a resort all have the same bed configuration (OKW = 2 queens, all others at WDW = 1 queen/1 double sofabed). Lockoff 2 bedrooms are a 1 bedroom + studio, your second bedroom would be the studio and have the studio configuration. In a dedicated 2 bedroom, the second bedroom is not a studio. Except for some dedicated 2 bedrooms at BCV, the second bedroom will have 2 queen beds. The second bedoom in a dedicated will not have a separate entrance or a kitchenette.

Thanks for the clarification.... i knew there were differences somewhere with the beds, just wasn't sure where. :thumbsup2

Except for their Grand Villas, SSR has ALL lockoffs (one bedrooom and an adjoining studio.) They can be booked as a 2-bedroom lockoff, a separate 1-bedroom, &/or a separate studio.

BWV has no dedicated 2BR villas. All 2BRs are lock-offs, but it does have some dedicated Studios and 1BRs that do not connect to another villa.

SSR has both dedicated and lock-off 2BRs, but no dedicated 1BRs or Studios.

Here is the configuration for each DVC resort:

OKW - 0 Dedicated Studios - 0 Dedicated 1Bdrm - 274 Dedicated 2Bdrm - 230 Lockoffs - 27 Grand Villas = 531 Units / 761 Max. Available Rooms

VB - 0 Dedicated Studios - 0 Dedicated 1Bdrm - 18 Dedicated 2Bdrm - 36 Lockoffs - 6 Grand Villas - 112 Inn Rooms = 172 Units / 208 Max. Available Rooms

HHI - 0 Dedicated Studios - 0 Dedicated 1Bdrm - 76 Dedicated 2Bdrm - 21 Lockoffs - 5 Grand Villas = 102 Units / 123 Max. Available Rooms

BWV - 97 Dedicated Studios - 130 Dedicated 1Bdrm - 0 Dedicated 2Bdrm - 149 Lockoffs - 7 Grand Villas = 383 Units / 532 Max. Available Rooms

VWL - 20 Dedicated Studios - 27 Dedicated 1Bdrm - 44 Dedicated 2Bdrm - 45 Lockoffs - 0 Grand Villas = 136 Units / 181 Max. Available Rooms

BCV - 36 Dedicated Studios - 20 Dedicated 1Bdrm - 78 Dedicated 2Bdrm - 74 Lockoffs - 0 Grand Villas = 208 Units / 282 Max. Available Rooms

SSR - 0 Dedicated Studios - 0 Dedicated 1Bdrm - 360 Dedicated 2Bdrm - 432 Lockoffs - 60 THV - 36 Grand Villas = 888 Units / 1320 Max. Available Rooms

AKV - 46 Dedicated Studios - 0 Dedicated 1BR villas - 140 Dedicated 2BR villas - 250 Lockoffs - 22 Grand Villas = 134 villas within Jambo House (AKL) , 324 villas in Kidani Village for a total of 458 Units / 708 Max. Available Rooms.

BLT - 0 Dedicated Studios - 0 Dedicated 1BR villas - 148 Dedicated 2BR villas - 133 Lockoffs - 14 Grand Villas = 295 Units / 428 Max. Available Rooms

VGC - 0 Dedicated Studios - 0 Dedicated 1BR villas - 23 Dedicated 2BR villas - 23 Lockoffs - 2 Grand Villas = 48 Units / 71 Max. Available Rooms

thanks for the clarification, Doc.
when we purchased SSR in 2007, the woman hosting the display villas told us that all SSR villas were 2-bedroom lockoffs, except for Grand Villas. guess I shouldn't have presumed she was correct :confused3 lol.

thanks for the clarification, Doc.
Ditto!

We stayed in a dedicated 2BR at SSR earlier this month and were told there were no configurations at that resort that would have allowed separated charges for our guests as I'm used to at BWV. I interpreted that to mean no lockouts ... oops!

Thanks all for the great responses. Where would I be able to find the required points for the lock-off or do I just take a one bedroom + studio?

It's the points for a 2 BR -- because that's what you're actually reserving, a 2 BR. Lockoff or dedicated are the same # of points.

Thanks again, this is great stuff! Would the points then be (Dream Season 2010 Lake View): 1 Br lock off = 411 pts (274+13) and 2 Br lock off = 491 (354+137)?

I think you're misunderstanding. There isn't any such thing as a 1 BR lock-off. A 2 BR lock-off is physically a 1 BR + a studio, but the point cost is the same as any other 2 BR.

I'm not sure the reason for the question. One point is that IF you reserve a 2 BR l/o, you cannot break it down later and cancel only one portion or the other.

For the 2 BR unit, the points are all the same but if you take the components separately and add the points together, the totals will always be higher. For a week in Dream season a 2 BR (even if it's a l/o) Lake View is 350 while if you reserved the studio and 1 BR separately, it'd be 276+139=415. While reserving the smaller components can often give you more flexibility if you don't know the party makeup, it is the more expensive option. Of course you could schedule the best guess and try to change it later if the group changes. Another approach is to schedule the preferred larger AND smaller unit and then cancel later once you know what you need. This can take quite a number of points though.
