Hi There, I am new to the cruising thing. We are going on our first cruise on the Fantasy on Jan 2, 2016. Just trying to figure out if we need to bring Lanyards with us, or as first time cruisers, do they provide us with one when we embark? I see some on Amazon that are about $4.80 CDN, however ones with the pouches are almost $30....is this right?

Thanks for everyone's input!

First cruise you need a lanyard they are not given to you.

I would add they are on sale on the ship and at reasonable prices.

If you are a DVC member, you can get free lanyards at the member welcome event on the afternoon of embarkation. Otherwise you will need to buy them if you want them.

On subsequent cruises, you will get Castaway Club lanyards matching your Castaway Club level.

As PP's have said, if it's your first cruise you can bring one or buy one on board. If you're lucky enough to run into someone like me at the cruise terminal, I'll gladly give you mine - I have a dozen at home from different trips for our family of 6 that I don't know what to do with! I think $30 sounds VERY high though for a lanyard with a pouch! You can get plain or designed lanyards at the dollar store and a pack of plastic pouches for a few dollars, or even go on Etsy and do a search for Disney Lanyards - you'll find tons of really cute customized ones for much less than $30. You may also find you don't like wearing the lanyard - some do, some don't - so I would suggest not spending too much on them for a first trip, plus if you sail again you will get Castaway Club lanyards in the future, as others have said. Have a great first cruise!

They sell Disney themed ones at Hot Topic so many other places. You can make one easily enough from ribbon and a pocket bought at an office supply store like Staples.

Just curious, we are going on our first cruise in December. Why do you have to have a lanyard?

You don't have to, but many people consider it the easiest way to carry around your Key to the World card, which is your room key, used for most transactions onboard, and needed to embark and disembark the ship at every port.

You don't *need* one. Some want one.

You do everything with your key to the world, which is a keycard. Opens the door, you charge espresso drinks and boozey drinks to it, etc. So you need it with you, and you have to take it off the ship with you (along with photo ID for the grownups) to get back onboard.

A lanyard is a convenient place to keep it, and many do. Others use their wallets or purses. Or even pockets.

I like my Witz brand hard plastic, waterproof, "locker", and I will either use its included cord lanyard or swap it out for a Disney lanyard or my Ravenclaw lanyard depending on my mood.

Thanks for the explanation! I was starting to think it was a rule or something. :)

They are similar to the lanyards people wear to the Disney parks, except color coded for your level of Castaway Club membership. I put pins on mine, just like in the parks. It's nice to have the card handy, now that the doors are touch locks, where you just touch the KTTW card to your door instead of taking the card out of the holder and sliding it.

Good tip if you haven't cruised before. If you don't mind a little extra weight on your landyard, it is really convenient to have one of the hard plastic waterproof cases like bumbershoot is talking about - some of them will even hold your phone - which can really come in handy to protect it from water and sand. I figured that out on my second cruise and have been using one ever since. If you don't care for wearing it around your neck with the plastic case on it, the CC lanyards are long enough (for many people) to even wear like a crossbody bag, but still be much smaller and more convenient.

Hi Bumbershoot, where can you get the Witz brand hard plastic, waterproof, "locker"?

I bought some on Amazon with a zippered pouch and clear card slot for the kttw card. They came in a 3 pack -on Mickey, one Minnie, one with Mickey and friends- and it was less than $10 for the set and free shipping with Prime. I've seen individual ones with Disney characters for around $5, and other multi packs for up to $30. I just did a search for Disney Cruise, and several popped up. After seeing this thread, glad I bought them! Wasn't sure wed need them, but thought they'd come in handy.

Amazon.

I got mine at REI but they don't seem to carry them anymore (last time I looked, anyway).

I got the smaller CC-sized one. They also make passport-sized ones, and they make thicker ones that can hold smallish things other than CCs.

We also have seen them for sale at WDW (we bought one specifically at a giftshop at Boardwalk), WDW-themed of course.

I got a brand new one in package (silver lanyard) on ebay.ca for $2.79CDN + $2.50 shipping so maybe check ebay?
