Hello all, I was wondering if you could help I have a picture that I want to make black and white but keep my kids in color how can I do that is there a specific program I should use?

You can do it in most any photo editor, but the specific steps may vary a bit. In general, you need to "select" the object(s) you want to isolate. In Photoshop Elements, I usually use the magnetic lasso to do this. I usually copy that object into a new layer and then convert the background layer to b&w. When I'm finished, I flatten the layers and save it as a jpg file if I want to print it. Oh, and I start with a copy so that I still have the original image.

I think that some people convert the image to b&w, then use an eraser tool to "erase" the b&w. So in your case, you would use the eraser on your kids.

Hope that makes sense. Someone else can probably explain it more clearly. I'd never make it writing instruction manuals.

Wow ok clearly I have a lot more to learn than I thought. So I need to download or purchase a photoshop program something like shutterfly won't do.
RadioNate: thanks for those links I will try them out.
Is this a lengthy process? Just wondering if anyone has tried it.

Thanks

I don't think that any of the on-line services like Shutterfly or Snapfish offer these tools. I don't know about Picasa or any of the other freebies, though someone here probably does. You can get Photoshop Elements 4.0 for less than $100 (and no doubt 3.0 or 2.0 for substantially less than that). Microsoft's photo editor (Picture It?) is also quite a bit less than the latest version of PSE.

Once you get the hang of it, selective colorization can be done fairly quickly (a matter of minutes, not hours). It's easier with objects that have well-defined edges, like certain flowers. People are a bit trickier because it's hard to get all of their hair, etc. without getting any of the background. There is a thread on this board where people have posted their images--try searching for "selective coloring" or something along those lines. I'd do it, but I need to get off the computer!

You can do it quick and roughly or with greater detail and quality. But sometimes it is hard to tell the diference between.
THe quick way is to select either the background or the subject. If you select the subject then inverse the selection through the select menu. Then choose "remove color" or "convert to black and white". Whatever your program calls the routine.
In fact I reccomend the quick method first. You will be encouraged to learn more and when you learn layers (three years into photoshop for me so no rush) you will be able to see if the layer method actualy looks better.

This kind of photo is called Color accenting. I use photoshop 7.0. It is not the most recent but it still does all the things I want it to. When I tried it the first time I searched online for the directions. If you just have one specific photo I would be happy to do it for you. Also if you purchase the program, I will be happy to help you along. Digital photos with photo shop is an amazing thing.

There is a freeware program called GIMP. Its free and can do selective colorization. It has a tutorial on how to do it. Best of all its free
