We are going to IKEA this weekend (3 hour drive) to get a bed for my DD.
Online they show all their twin beds with little flat matresses. Really flat like a fold up cot mattress.
My question: Can you get a regular (read american) type mattress to put on these bedframes? Or do you have to get the mattress at IKEA?
Thanks

The first thing I would do is call and make sure they have the bed you want in stock before driving three hours. They probably will, but you just want to be sure. We went in for bunk beds twice at the two Chicago area IKEAs and both were out (but they were on sale at the time, which may explain it). I think you can use a standard twin mattress on most of their twin beds but not a boxspring. Most of their beds are platform beds or have slats.

No problem. I would also visit the IKEA website and make sure there are no extras. I was just there and noticed that the slats are not included with some of the beds.

I have the Hopen bed from Ikea (queen size). It does have slats, but also uses a box spring and mattress. It depends on the type of bed you choose, but yes, all Ikea beds fit regular mattresses.

Both of my sons have IKEA beds-- one is a Robin and the other Hemnes. Both have twin mattresses (which we also purchased there, and really like) and the Hemnes also uses a box spring.

Both of my girls have Hemnes double beds. One has a box spring with hers the other has just the slats and the mattress. The only real difference is that the bed without the box spring sits a little lower than the one with. Niether of them have mattresses from Ikea.

My boys have beds (actually a bunk bed set) from Ikea that we've got some posturpedic mattresses and box springs on. Seriously, their mattresses are better than ours. We purchased the beds at a regular mattress retailer and the bunk beds about a year later.

I don't recall the name of the bed, but boy, it is sturdy!

Our guest room has twin Ikea beds with slats. We used two twin mattresses we already had and it's fine.

All of our beds have slats. We don't have any with box springs.

DS, 5, has been sleeping on an IKEA twin-size bed for a year.
They sell slats for every bed they have in the showroom
that uses them - they're around $20 extra plus the cost of the bed.
The slats take the place of the box spring.
We bought a good twin mattress somewhere else,
and it works perfect on the bed.
We have the one that is coated white (board not wood)
with 3 pull out drawers underneath.
We like it, but it is very heavy! Definitely stays put :)

My dd's IKEA loft bed has a regular mattress in it. My boys bunk bed the bottom takes a regular mattress but the top only takes one of those rolled up mattresses. If you put a regular mattress in, it rises up considerably over the railing which I just didn't think was safe for a kid on a high bunk. There are warnings all over the bed when you buy it, so its fairly obvious. With the lower mattress the railings are a good height to prevent rolling off. FWIW, ds thinks it's more comfortable than his previous mattress (which is was a good one). He's a weird kid.

A few of the twins in the kids sections call for the roll up mattresses for similiar reasons, but again they are well marked. You will definitely know in advance what will work or not.

My sons Ikea loft bed takes a regular double mattress.
