Your balance is due at check in. I'm not sure of exactly when they charge the balance to your card on file with online check in and skipping the front desk.

You could also call and apply the gift cards at any time before arrival, or pay the whole thing off.

If you want to pay it with gift cards, I would highly advise you to call and do that ahead of time.

Disney will charge your card on file first thing in the morning of your check in.

I learned that when we arrived to check in to POFQ and I was going to pay with gift cards but they had already charged the balance to my debit card earlier that morning.

When we had a RO reservation at the CR this winter, we paid the balance upon check-in; it had not been already charged to our credit card. I can't, of course, guarantee that this will or will not happen with your reservation, but I was able to pay off part of our balance with a gift card and the rest on my credit card.

Usually, that's how it works for us as well. We pay the balance when we check in. However, in February we showed up and were told we didn't have a balance. I knew that couldn't possibly be correct but the CM insisted there wasn't a balance. I checked back the next day and they said it was charged to my credit card, which isn't what I wanted because I had GC cards to pay with. They reversed the charges for me but it was kind of a pain. No idea why this time only they charged my card before I'd even arrived. I did arrive a little late (8pm) but that's happened before.

Next month I'm paying it off before we arrive to avoid the confusion.

ok thanks everyone do i call the hotel in the case port Orleans or the main number

Just FYI Feb and April 2015 we were charged the balance to our credit card before we checked in. Both were room only reservations, made with credit cards. For one we were charged in the morning - before we got on the airplane 1,000 miles away - and about 10 hours before we got the text that our room was ready. Before then we had always been charged when we checked in (at the front desk).

So like PPs said, if you want to use gift cards I'd phone before going on the trip and apply them in advance. (Worse case: you cancel the trip, they return the credit to the same gift cards. So, keep the gift cards until you get back home, just in case.)

For the past few years, my cc is charged well before we arrive -- I get a text from my cc company. The first time that happened, I had planned to pay with gift cards. They were able to reverse the charge to my cc and apply the gcs, but it took A LONG time to do that. Now I always call and apply my gcs before we arrive. Like @Amanda999 said, keep the gcs in case you cancel. They will only refund to the gcs used.

Yep I always call at least the day before I arrive to pay off my room with gift cards. I never want the rest of the room cost on whatever card I have given them.

Holy smokers. That's not good. I am holding two rooms for our trip. One for me and one for my DD and her Boyfriend. Although I didn't mind paying the one night deposit, I don't feel like being charged for their entire room for their entire stay. How can one prevent that?

Call and pay it in advance.

When they charge in advance, are they using the card from when you booked?

Or are they using the card you entered during online checkin?

Of course, most are likely using the same card, so how would one know? But maybe someone switched cards and therefore knows.

Because if they are using the card entered during online checkin, well, you don't actually have to enter a card during online checkin. So that would solve it, if they are using the card from that.

(this has been a question on my mind for about a year now)

I want to say that my credit card used during online check in was charged and that was a different payment than I used for my deposit. Granted that was in 2011, but I had planned to use a gift card at check in. I just held onto the gift card and still had a large amount left after that trip so I took a second one later that year.

I don't do online checkin and when I get there, I still have a balance to pay on my room only reservation. I have NEVER had them charge my credit card that I used for my deposit to pay off my balance. I had 5 room only reservations just last year alone. And they were all that way.

I believe that if you do online check-in and attach a CC, then your balance will be paid during their early morning process when the resorts get everything ready for that day. We always pay using discounted GCs and I also use Disney's gift card site to combine all the $50 and $100 GCs that we have accumulated before the trip, this way, when I do call them, I just have to give them 1 or 2 GC numbers and not 20+

Excellent. So it really seems that they are using the CC from online checkin. Which means there is a VERY easy way to prevent this pre-charging from happening.

That's what I was thinking. But I wasn't sure.

Interestingly, here's what the FAQ on the official Disney web site says:

Q.

I have an existing package or hotel reservation and I have only paid my deposit. Will you automatically deduct the balance due payment from my credit card?

A.

No. We will not automatically charge your credit card to pay the balance due.

If you have a vacation package, you canpay off the balance online or call (407) 939-7675. Guests under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian permission to call. For your convenience, you are able to use the payment method stored in your online account.

If you have a room-only reservation, you will pay off your balance when you arrive at your Disney Resort hotel.

You can view your existing Disney Resort hotel reservations on the My Reservations page in My Disney Experience. You will have to sign in to view your reservations.

No mention is made of ever being charged during online check in, or the morning of your first day. It just says that if you have a room-only reservation, you'll pay off the balance when you arrive.

When it comes to paying for rooms, I don't know what to believe. I made our room-only reservation for a 2016 May stay at WL last July and paid the deposit. When the spring discounts came out in January, I called WDW and upgraded our room. Still a room-only reservation, no package, and my reservation number did not change. The CM told me that our balance would be due by April 21. In February, I called WDW and paid off the balance with our Disney Visa. I wasn't sure the payment would go through, since I had seen on some threads that you cannot pay off a room-only reservation early. However, the payment went through without any problems, and Disney even sent me a confirmation email that the entire amount for the room had been paid. Has anyone else been told that they had a deadline to pay off the balance of their room before their trip?

No, you should not have been given a due date for a room only ressie. Something doesn't sound right. You are always welcome to prepay your room only reservation in full prior to arrival. That is not a problem.
But I am still trying to figure out why you were given a due date....something isn't right with that.
