Is there typically any charge for receiving a long distance call on your cell phone? My daughter has a friend who is currently doing a semester in Israel and the friend would like to call DD. My daughter just wants to be sure it won't generate a charge on our end. We have AT&T if that matters.

LD is normally charged to the originating party only. The only exception is on 800 numbers where the called party pays the LD charges.

unless you are in Canada and both parties get the long distance charges.

I would check with AT&T to see seeing as it is not just a long distance call, but an overseas call.

I had some good friends over in Australia and they could call me with no extra charges on my end :thumbsup2 I have AT&T

In Canada you pay long distance on incoming calls based on where you are. You carrier will have defined a incoming local calling area for your number. If you're inside the area when you receive a call there is no long distance. Outside it and you pay long distance but it's only the charge between your local calling area and where you are. It's all very confusing because the incoming and outgoing calling areas don't match. We're such a backwater when it comes to cell phone plans.

For overseas calls, it won't cost you to receive calls, but your DD's friend might want to look into something like Skype or some other type of internet communication which would be of little or no cost. (Skype can call to a cell phone or to a phone connected to a computer - I think they even have a wifi phone.)

You will not be charged for incoming international calls on your cell phone, at least not on AT&T.
