I can't find an answer to this in the manual, so I figured I would ask here.

I have a Forerunner 305. I am concentrating on losing weight right now, and was wondering if I can use my Garmin just for the heart rate monitor and calorie burn feature? I am taking a class at the Y and doing weights and other cardio (elliptical/rowing etc). It would be nice to know how much I am burning. I tried using it on indoor mode, but since I didn't "go" anywhere, it didn't do anything. Any suggestions? If it doesn't have the ability, then I guess I will have to break out my Mio watch and use that.

Thanks for any advice:)

I haven't use the calorie field, but I used to wear the HRM when running on the treadmill all the time. It should work without a problem.

I asked this question to the Garmin guy at the expo. I have a 405, but I'm assuming they are similar. Apparently you can turn GPS to "off" then enter training mode and it will display your HR and time for you.

The 405 will give you the time and HR indoors - I use this all the time- I also get a calorie burn when I run, but not when I do a Cardio Blast or Core class I'm not sure why as I use the monitor on the same settings as for running?

Not entirely sure, some of those calculate calories burned based on distance not HR (go figure running a mile full out and running a mile at a more comfortable pace - assuming you keep the same basic stride - burns the same number of calories - walking actually burns even more calories per mile). I think this is the case for the Garmin because the HR is optional on that one.

Guess I will just wear my Mio watch for class and take my HR occasionally to get an idea of calorie burn. Was hoping the Garmin would do it, would make life a lot easier.

Thanks!!
