Question about free dining with cancellation offer

I am booked at a perfect time for us in late May and am hoping to still be able to go on our Disney trip. However, I am being realistic and realizing that this likely won't happen. I am wondering if I can book a package starting June 1 and then get the free dining on that package if my original trip must be cancelled. I don't want to cancel it prematurely as I REALLY REALLY want the dates in May.

So if I pre-book a package deal today for beginning of June, can I apply the deal to it when/if I am forced to cancel my May trip?

Maybe. If the resort & room type is available under the discount promo, they should be able to modify it to apply the free dining. If they refuse, the worst than can happen is you rebook with the offer. They normally will modify an already booked reservation if they can. This is the thread about that offer. It is on the discounts subforum of the resorts board

It's definitely worth a shot. This promo wasn't operating like typical FD promos where you had to find rooms that were placed in a promo inventory. WDW was allowing guests who qualified for the offer to book any room that was in general inventory and then they were applying the FD promo to those rooms. If they say no, as focusondisney, you could simply rebook with the offer.

Since they haven't cancelled you yet and as of now the parks have not been definitively closed in late May, the free dining offer wouldn't apply. if May ends up cancelled, they'll probably do the same kind of thing, but the offer wasn't for anyone booking in the summer, it was only for people who had a trip booked during the shutdown.

Yes you can. We were in the same situation and they let me do it. We were scheduled to go May 26-31. Once I heard about the free dining offer I booked a basic package in June that didn’t have any other discount attached to it. We decided this week to cancel the May reservation. All I had to give them was my confirmation number for my June reservation and they added the free dining offer.

Thank you both! When I chatted with a CM today, she told me that no free dining offers were available for those whose trips were cancelled. DOH! I'll try again later!
Just swing by the official WDW announce to review the facts and then call the specific phone number for the offer.

This offer is valid only for Guests who previously booked a vacation package or room reservation to stay at a Disney Resort hotel at Walt Disney World Resort for travel dates March 16 to May 31, 2020. Offer not valid for reservations traveling these dates that were cancelled before March 1, 2020.

If OP has a vacation booked in May, they are eligible for the free dining promotion. It's for guests who were booked for March 16 through May 31. It has nothing to do with whether WDW cancelled in May yet or not:

"Eligible Guests can take advantage of a vacation package offer that includes accommodations at a select Disney Resort hotel, park admission and a Disney dining plan—valid for arrivals most nights June 1 through September 30, 2020 when you book through May 31, 2020.

Thank you guys! We booked a second trip late last night and got all of the restaurant reservations we wanted but NONE of the fastpasses we wanted. We are okay with that if it means we can have one last big hurrah with my senior! Here's hoping the virus goes away soon!

You were able to book the second trip without cancelling the first? We were told it was a trade in kind of deal. The free dining for the canceled reservation.

Yes. We just booked a standard package in June that they were able to switch to free dining once we canceled our May trip. I was planning on keeping the May reservation a little longer until I saw Universal was closed till June so I just went ahead and canceled.

I was kinda curious about the free Disney dining. I have a room only reservation where we got a good discounted rate of $69/night at All Star Sports for April 26-May 1. If you decide to reschedule for a period like August/September to take advantage of the free Disney dining, would you have to pay any price differences or would Disney still honor the rate I paid for my existing reservation? I was possibly planning on cancelling and getting my initial deposit back as my vacation plans for Sept are still in flux, but would reschedule and hold reservation if they included the dining package.

Sorry. Discounts for cancelled reservations are not carrying forward. You would book at the current rate available for your new dates.

Enjoy your vacation!

Just to add to that, the free dining cannot be combined with any other discount, including discounts like Fun and Sun that may be available for the future date. You have to pay the non-discounted rate on the new dates. It would have been more expensive for us to take the free dining deal at our resort in August than to make use of the August sun and fun offer at that particular resort. But we switched to another hotel where the non-discounted rack rate was lower and ended up getting some considerable savings with the free dining deal. So you may need to play around with resorts and dates to find out what deal is best for you.
