Question about flying w/child and ID...

My 14 yr sister is coming with me to the DIS Convention in November. We are flying out of Logan in Boston. My Mom has never been asked for ID for her on a flight. With the tighter security at the airports, I'm sure they will ask for ID for her but what is considered ID for a child? The only thing I can think of is a Birth Certificate. But I've heard that Logan is requiring 2 IDs now. So I don't know what else she should bring. She doesn't have a school ID and Mass requires you to be 18 to get a state ID.

I also have the same question. We're going to WDW the weekend after Thanksgiving. Our family is flying out of Midway. We have 2 boys ages 7 & 10, will they need a photo I.D. ?
I plan on bringing their birth certificates. I'd like to hear anyones thoughts on this.

Since you've got some time I would wait a few days and then call the airline and ask what is necessary.

Your kids probably don't have US Passports, but this might be something you want to get for future travel. I got one for my 6 year old DD this summer because we thought we might go to Mexico this winter (I know you don't need a Passport for Mexico, but we're Latina and I just felt safer with the Passport for her). Now I'm glad I have it for our upcoming travel to WDW in November. They are good for 5 years and are about $60.00 (I believe). This doesn't solve your immediate problem, but I wanted to offer an option for the future.

You can call your local Drivers License Department. I think it runs approx. $5.00 for a photo ID. I know ours processes them, and my sister works for the Iowa Dept. and they will make an ID for children.

I had posted about this very topic today in the families section but here goes anyhow...
maybe it will help you.

We (myself, two sons..ages 6 and 9) are flying Sept 26 out of the Indy airport on Delta Express nonstop to Orlando. I called both the airport and Delta to get the scoop today.

I was told by Delta that I had to have two photo Id's (luckfully I work in an emergency room, so thats not a problem) and both boys should have a photo ID. I called the local BMV and they said for about $7 they could give me a photo ID with the boys birth certificates...that should suffice.

The airport said allow a minimum of no less than 2 hours for security checks to get thru the airport. They also said that everything in your carry on would be searched, any thing that could even resemble a weapon would be canned...from a pair of fingernail clippers with the little knife like instrument that swings out...to a disposable razor....if these are in your carryons...they are history. If these things are essentials, pack them in your checked luggage and you should be ok. Also, they warned me that we could be patted down of which I shared with the boys...they thought it was cool...lol.

Adults need two forms of picture ID's? What would be good examples of picture ID's if you don't get one through work?

I understand the reasoning but this is getting complicated.

Planogirl: Check with the airline you're flying. Both Northwest and US Air sent me e-mail messages about my upcoming trips and specifically said one photo ID issued by a government agency (US, state, or local government). That's together with all the other requirements, but I'm just addressing the photo ID issue. I'm bringing both my driver's license and passport, but that's more than what they are requiring. Delta and/or Indianapolis could be different, but it's going to be tough to get 2 photo ID's for a lot of people. Before you fret too much, go to the source and ask.

a state issued photo id would be one of the following, drivers license ,non drivers license, government work id,welfare id, county id, (i am going by the list I have here) school ID and passports. all states issue a non drivers license ID for adults and kids alike. I have seen many ofhtem when checking in passengers. pretty much from about every state. a lot of parents who are divorced got these for kids in case. I also have an ID for my DD that the police made it also has her fingerprint on it as well.

I just spoke to someone at Delta. I am travelling with a 1yo, 11yo and 14yo. He said ID is not needed for anyone under 12, if the 14yo has a school id bring it if not, the acoompying adult's id will suffice.

I have gotten a response to the ID question from Delta via E-mail they said ID isn't required for kids under 18, you can bring personal cd/tape players and gameboys and matches/lighters are ok for carry-on luggage.. hope this helps Michelle

In the Boston paper this a.m. a pic. of a State Trooper at Logan and the pile that has been confiscated; it shows many lighters, matches, forks, spoons, ( plastic and metal) nail files & clippers, scissors, tweezers, razors, can openers & corkscrews, small screwdriver, also metal cans of hair spray, shaving cream etc, the Mass Port spokesman says anything metal is taken out. Time to clean out those purses and diaper bags, I always carry the baby nail clippers and a baby spoon. Logan may be tougher than other airports but thought I would pass the info. on.

Southwest says to bring copies of the kids' birth certificates, not the originals. No photo ID for kids necessary. I didn't ask about photo ID for me, but I guess I'll bring my work badge in case they need an extra photo ID.

BTW, non-driver's licenses cost $15 in MD. Too much. It would cost me $45 to get them for all three of my kids, so I'm going to trust that the birth certificates will be sufficient.

Sounds like even though the FAA has made many changes that we still get different answers from different airlines about ID's for children.

I'm guessing there has been no real change in whether you need ID for children or not but that Southwest has always wanted ID for children and Delta has not.

Everything I've read regarding ID for my children with Delta is that it is not necessary for children under 18 even after September 11.

Before September 11, Southwest was still requiring ID for children.

I will bring their birth certificates because of our cruise, not really for the airport, but at least I will have them, if for some un-forseen reason, they end up asking for ID for them.

To make things more confusing, I have e-tickets, for the first time, and I have to worry about having the proper ID and paperwork for them too!

I had a change of heart after posting this afternoon, and decided that it's better safe than sorry...so I took my big kids (10 and 8) to get photo ID's. The woman at MVA said, "You must be flying." She said they've had a lot of people coming in for them.
