I was given an electric fireplace for Christmas...YAY!!!

I've wanted a fireplace to decorate for Christmas practically my whole life.

Now reading the warnings on the instruction manual, it says not to place stockings or any type of decoration on the unit.....what the.....

I'm quite disappointed reading this :sad1: If it has to be sitting there bare then is like I don't even want it anymore.

I've seen stockings and all kinds of things decorating real wood, gas and all kind of fireplaces. I don't have any real life experience with this stuff, so if anyone could share their experiences with me, I'd appreciate it.

I got an electric fireplace 3 years ago and it's had decorations on it since then with no problem

That's what I wanted to hear! Thank you!

They are beautiful, aren't they? :)

They would be a fire hazard, on an electric or real wood or gas fire place.

Fire code here requires 3 feet from the fireplace to anything flamable. We had to buy a fire resistent wool throw rug in front of ours when we put our insert in, because it sticks out to meet code. We have a barrel shaped fireplace, and we shelving 4 week from the fire box, that's there our stockings and decorations go, nothing on the fire place or within 3 feet.

We had (now my parents have it) a fake electric fireplace with mantel and hung stockings on it, sat pumpkins on it, and other decoractions throughout the year. It never got hot enough to be a threat. However I'm not sure if you are talking about this kind of electric fireplace.

I can understand not hanging the stockings in front of the heater vents, though this would only be a problem when the heater is on; but on top of it?

I've had it on with the flame effect only for seversl hours, and it feels pretty cool.

Funny you mention the rug. The FAQ on their website goes on about how safe these units are, and one of the questions is if it can be placed ON a rug, and the answer is yes! So the whole thing is pretty contradictory

It is one of those electric fireplaces with a wood mantle that you plug into a regular electrical outlet. it has fake logs and fake flame effect, and the light comes from a lightbulb. Can be used with or without heath

I have one that is also a TV stand. While I do put things on top, like my TV and knik knacks, I don't hang anything in front of it. If I was going to use it as a mantle for the stockings, I would remove the stockings before turning on the heater. It throws a lot of heat.

Yes, that's what I'm planning to do; put stuff on top, but nothing on front of it.

I've seen stockings hanging on fireplaces (in pictures) my whole life, but I won't risk it.

As my friend at the fire department keeps reminding me, and it's common sense, the cause of most house fires is either a malfunction of, or something being placed too close to, a source of heat.

I grew up in a fireman's household. Saw some hauntingly terrible things in my childhood. Plus my own grandma died in a house fire when I was small.

I wouldn't ever put anything flammable close to anything that's throwing heat (candles, fireplace, space heater, heck...even the toaster).

Definitely right! Pre-planning is practical. In this site: http://proelectricfireplace.com/ I found my exisitng fireplace. I got it affordably, meeting my requirements like the availability on the level of heat with remote control and timer. You should check it out!
