question about disney transportation from POR to other resorts-- should we get a cab?

Hi-- I was just wondering if any of you had attempted to take the buses from the Port Orleans Riverwalk to dinners at any of the other WDW resorts? (or from any resort to another resort) We are trying to decide if we should rent a car or not. We love to eat at the other resorts and have on our list for our next trip Chef Mickeys, Whispering Canyon and the May Cafe (all for dinners).

Can we take the buses if we go through the main transportation center? Is it easier to just take a cab? I was thinking if we were leaving a park we could take the buses to the resort and then maybe cab back to the POR?? Does anyone know what the cabs would cost?

I have not made that specific trip, but I know it is a pain to get between any two resorts at WDW unless you are going between monorail resorts.

Figure on AT LEAST one hour to get from one resort to another by WDW transportation.

Cab fair runs roughly $10 to $15 using a metered taxi depending on where you're going.

If you need a taxi more than about once per day, consider renting a car. You should be able to get a compact for $25 per day or so.

I think I remember using a rental agency that was in the lobby of the either the Dolphin or the Swan when we were there, so you can use WDW transportation for pick up and drop off.

I will offer an opinion - although I've never actually tried it!

Since POR has a water shuttle to DTD, you could take it and then hop the bus to whatever resort you want to go to from there. Might not be TOO bad of a trip.

We love going to other resorts for dinner - and just to check them out. But, it can be a hassle. We've taken a cab before, but I just can't remember off hand how much it costs. I want to say around $10-15 or so, but I'm not sure. I think it depends on which resort you're coming from and going to.

We did Chef Mickey's and WCC last trip and we were staying at POR. Take the bus to the Magic Kingdom, then walk or monorail to the Contemp. Likewise, from MK you can take the boat to WL. The trip to WL is long, Contemp much faster. We just planned for it. The worst of it was that while we were at Chef Mickey's, it started pouring. To get from the monorail to the bus stop, we had to walk through a huge flooded area. We were soaked!

We have done exactly what you are wondering about!! We have stayed at both POR and POFQ and have visited almost every other resort during the times we visited WDW.

My best advice is to be flexible. It could take some time. If you are on a tight time schedule, I wouldn't try to visit too many unless you rent a car. I personally wouldn't rent a car, the WDW transportation will get you everywhere.

When I say flexible here's what I mean. If we were leaving a park in the afternoon and felt we were ready for a resort visit we would get on the first resort bus that showed up (out of the resorts we really wanted to see), that way there was no waiting for particular buses. You can then take a bus back to a park or transportation center to get back to your own resort. Or what we would do is grab a bus from the resort we were visiting to take us to a different park to finish up the evening. (i.e. MGM in the am, bus to visit resort afternoon, bus to Epcot to finish the evening)

As stated above there are other modes of transportation...monorail, boats...but the concept is all the same

We are staying at OKW in Nov. with a large group and plan to rent a minivan thru ALamo at the Disney Car Care Center the afternoon we arrive and just keep it for the first two days of our quick trip. Will use ME to and from the airport. Figure that, by the time we get to hotels for dinner two nights and make a trip to the grocery store and possibly to Millenium Mall, car rental will be close to cost (incl. tips) of cabs for our group...but we will have more flexibility.

There are good suggestions here.
1. Take boat from POR to DTD then bus to Contemporary.
2. Take boat from POR to DTD then bus MK and then monorail to Contemporary.

Marc1477, the 2nd option is wrong... you can't bus from DTD to the MK, but you could bus directly from POR to MK.

That's one of the great things about POR & POFQ - it's so easy to get to other resorts. Just take the boat ride to DTD (about 20 mins.) and then you can catch a but to where ever you want to go.

We were staying at the GF last summer and were going to POR for a carriage ride and to see Bob Jackson. On the way over we were running late and took a taxi. On the way back we just got on the bus for MK and took the ferry over the MK. It wasn't a hassle at all.

I at first was going to say take the bus to MK and hop on the monorail. But I guess there are a lot of factors to consider.

Wait time for bus to pick you up....Bus ride to MK approx. 15 mins...walk to monorail and wait for monorail...quick mono ride

OR

Wait time for boat to pick you up....ride to DTD approx. 20-25 mins....walk to buses and wait for bus...15 min bus ride to resort

I think I would say take the bus and monorail.
