Question about Disney Rewards Visa

We're trying to decide if we want to sign up for this card. We received an offer for a $200 gift card, and we have a trip planned the last week of November. But I have a few questions . . .

Do you have to use the Visa to get the discount in the restaurants inside the park, or do you just show it to them? We'd like to use a gift card for meals, but still take advantage of the Visa discount.

My kids aren't into characters so the meet and greet doesn't do much for us. We don't buy much merchandise, just some toys here and there. What shops do you get the discount for? My kids tend to like the non-Main street shops - Adventureland, Buzz Lightyear, etc.

I love my Disney VISA. We use it all year for purchases, pay off the balance before finance charges, and rack up Disney points to use the next time we go back. As far as I know, the only place you get a discount is at the big Disney store downtown. If I am wrong, I would like to know too! The meet and greet comes with a free picture so we always do it to get the picture. Hope this helps some!

We had tried to show my Disney visa at the Greetings store in CA and we were not allowed to get the discount without actually paying with the card. I have no other experiences in the parks to go by. I did recently make a purchase at the Disney Store locally and received 10% off my $50+ purchase when I used my card.

Current policy seems to be that you must pay for your purchase with your Disney Visa in order to get the discount. In the past you could use a gift card that had a value of less than your purchase and then use your Disney Visa to pay off the balance and still get the discount. I don't know if that works anymore. The 10% discount is good off purchases of $50 or more pre-tax at many of the shops in the parks, and the World of Disney store, pin trader's and Marceline's in downtown Disney. I don't know any other specifics. And, yes, you can get the discount at your Disney store in the mall.

I'd definitely take the $200; I only got $100 when I got my card. I use my Disney Visa card for any purchase that I can't get better than 1% back on with my other credit card. Sometimes Chase will also send special bonus deals for extra % back on certain categories of purchases made for certain dates. Then I rack up all the charges I can in those categories. We pay off monthly. If you're going to carry a balance, cash back deals obviously don't compensate for that.

I got the card for a measly $15 gift card, so enjoy the $200. I got it because of the discounts at Big Thunder BBQ and at RideMakerz, but my reading of the card agreement is that I have to pay with that Visa for the 10% discount. But I could be wrong.

We got the same offer for a $200 gift card 1 month before our trip this past June. We used the gift card to pay for all our meals. Because of the gift card we did a few extra character meals than we probably would have. It was such a sweet bonus.

I was told that I had to use the Visa to get the discount at the restaurants and shops but when I told them that the gift card was a reward from the Disney Chase Visa I was able to use the gift card and get the discount.

Take the offer! Can't go wrong with a few hundred extra bucks for your trip. DW and I just got ours last month because we're going in Sept and got the $200 offer. The 1% back is ok, but we picked up the card because of the gift card and perks at the parks. We'll most likely cancel it upon return because we have better rewards cards already. And in a few years when we go to WDW again, will prob repeat the cycle

I get the Disney Visa $200 offer in the mail fairly regularly (couple times a year) even though we already have 2. But I can't find a link online. I did however find a $200 offer for the Chase Freedom (which is our primary card). Might be a better choice for now since you could easily apply for a Disney Visa at any time, with or without the $200 in order to get the discounts/perks... and this $200 is cash in hand, usable for anything not just Disney. And since it get's you into the "chase" system of cards, perhaps a Dis card offer would follow?

We also received the $200 offer in the mail. I've seen multiple offers for $40 or $50 gift cards at the parks and on the disneyland.com website. We received the mailed offer shortly after requesting a planning DVD. My assumption is that something triggers you as interested in Disney. For example booking a vacation, requesting a planning DVD, etc. Disney probably uploads the list to Chase on a monthly basis (or more) as part of their partnership agreement. From there Chase decides if they need you for the portfolio. If you are a fit they will mail you an offer, send you emails, etc. It all depends on what Chase needs for the portfolio (ie: revolvers, transactors, etc).

I don't work for Disney or Chase but I do work for a credit card company so I'm pretty familiar with how account acquisition works.
