Question About Ding

If I go into SWA 's regular booking site and see that flights (during the time I want) are all unavailable. Is that,the end of the story? (ie:does this mean that there will be or cannot be Ding fares offered if the site says Unavailable?) .....or is it possible that a certain number of seats can be "freed up" for that time period at some point ?

2nd Question.
Has anyone ever "lost out" when attempting to ,give up an existing booking to take advantage of a Ding (ie:attempting to book a Ding after giving up a regular far,onle to lose out on both?)

We booked our airfare about a month and a half ago at $79.00 pp each way. Yesterday, a ding came up for our travel time at $35.00 pp each way. I called SW to find out how to handle that. She told me that she would cancel my existing reservation, then I'd re-book the same flights using ticketless travel funds. I asked about canceling online and she told me that it would take up to 12 hours to take effect but if she did it for me it would be immediate. So I had her cancel our original, and I booked the new tickets right then. We have the same itinerary and now we have $176.00 in ticketless travel funds available to us for up to a year from the original time of booking.

I took advantage of the $35 ding fare too, but was able to cancel and re-apply my funds to the ding fare immediately on line. I also did receive a cancellation email instantly. So I am wondering about the 12 hour thing that the rep mentioned? I received a new confirmation number immediately and still have $161 remaining as a travel credit. I also worry about losing out when I cancel one and re-book the other. I did open up 2 windows and had everything ready to go after I cancelled, so for me I guess I have been lucky. I think I would call next time though, as it seems much easier and less stress involved!
