Question about DAS and using ecv

Going with a relative who is older and has bad back pain. She has had multiple epidurals with little relief. She is planning on renting an ecv but this is my question. Would back pain that she cannot stand in lines for long periods of time enable her to get a DAS card? Thinking if she could get DAS, we could wait in standby lines and she could join us at the entrance. Thanks for advise, I'm sure this has been asked before I could not find topic

No one knows for sure if she will or will not get a DAS as only the guest relations CMs can decide that. However, what you describe usually falls under the mobility clause that does not qualify for DAS. If she is renting an ECV many rides allows the ECV into the queue and those that do not will issue a paper return time or direct you to the wheelchair loading area depending on standby wait time.

Unfortunately, there is no way for your relative to join you at the entrance. The queues zigzag and it is almost impossible for someone to push through the line to join you. Not be able to stand in a line (for whatever reason-fatigue, back pain, broken leg, etc) is a mobility issue and does not typically qualify for a DAS.

Thanks for the quick reply. She is able to get around on her own, I'm just worried about her standing for long times in lines. Good to know some lines allow ecv in line if not, was not going to have her push through line late(she would die first). I thought the DAS would be best so we could wait for ride just not standing in line. It is definitely a mobility problem though so I expect she would not be able to get card. Thanks for your help

The DAS allows the DAS holder and 5 people in their party to wait outside of the lines. You are given a return time and enter the fastpass entrance when you have waited. As others have mentioned, there is no way for someone to join you waiting in the standby lines and if there is a mobility issue that is solved by the ecv, then likely that will be the solution Disney offers, not DAS. Many of the lines have been mainstreamed and now accommodate ECVs in the regular line.

Can she sit for the long periods she will be on the ECV? I know my back pain doesn't tolerate anything for a long period of time - sitting, standing, etc. Sitting on an ECV for the day would be as bad as standing for the day.

She does need to change position periodically. Sitting. Is better than standing because she can lean side to side. Thanks

You may want to look in to getting a wheel chair or roller where she can walk and push it and sit and have someone push her. If you have a few people that can push her then no one would have to do it all day. This way she dose not have to worry about sitting too long. She can park what every she use and walk some too. So if in the morning she dose better she can park and do some shorter lines.

Thank you for that idea. She is thinking of a walker with a fold down seat so she could sit when needed. Great information provided. Thank you all

i think she will be happy with a walker or roller if she finds she need to sit more then I would have a few numbers of venders in orlando with you just in case.

I would look into getting a rollator so she can walk, stand and lean as needed.

Most queues that cannot accept ECVs will have a manual chair provided at the ride entrance - you just have to ask the CM for it. I am not sure how many queues are not ECV-accessible, but in the past, I have seen people transfer to the manual chair, and then a member of their party pushed them through the queue. I cannot walk pretty much at all, and my husband is a complete paraplegic, and there is always a way to get to the ride vehicle.

I agree she will probably get more use out of an ECV. Even if she qualified for the DAS, it does not eliminate most of the standing in the park. It will not help with parades, pre-shows, buses/boats, restaurants, parades, or fireworks. Even when you get the return time, you have to wait in the FP/return line. That can easily be 20+ minutes. Once I waited close to an hour for BTMRR. The DAS is good if there is something in the queue which prevents a person from waiting safely, but it is not very helpful in reducing time spent standing...

Very helpful. Thank you for the information. She is thinking ecv at Epcot due to large park and walker with seat everywhere else. Good to be prepared. Thanks again to everyone for all the information
