Question about child's airline ticket?

I haven't flown for several years, so I hope you guys can help me out here. When we board, will we be asked for identification to make sure we are the same people as listed on the tickets? If so, what about my 12 year old DS? Am I supposed to bring along his birth certificate or something? (I hate to carry it around if I don't have to.) Thanks!

We've only had to show ID for the adults travelling. When I booked our next flight last week, the phone agent made a point of saying that the adults will need ID and she didn't say anything about the children. HTH.

I usually travel with my children's birth certificates, because different airlines have given me different opinions on this. Some require it, some don't, so just to be safe, I'd bring it, since I usually don't trust the reservation agents on having the proper information, and you don't want to be denied boarding for something as small as this.

We have never been asked for ID on our children. They are now 9 & 10. So far they have flown, USAir, AirTran, Delta and Southwest.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I am going to make a Xerox of it and carry that along with my reservation confirmations. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

I asked US Airways about whether ID was required for children and they replied no, as long as teh travael was within the US.

once the child hits 16 they start to ask for photo id (figuring they drive at that age) but it is required once they hit 18.
