If you go ahead and book at your home resort at the 11 month window to be sure to have a room, can you then change this reservation to another DVC resort once the 7 month window opens? If so, is there any "penalty" for the change?
Our use year is December...I have an 8 night stay booked at SSR (our home resort) in January and would like to call this week to see if there is any availability at BCV, BWV, or WLV.
Thanks for the help.

Yes - many people do exactly what you propose - book their home resort at 11 months to be sure of having a place to stay & then change to another resort at 7 months if there is availability.

There is no charge or penalty for doing that.

Good luck - hope you find availability

No penalty to change reservations; in fact, many DVCers do exactly what you did so that they're assured of having someplace to stay on their trip. :thumbsup2
So go ahead and call this week, and good luck in getting whatever you want.

The only possible complication would be if the new reservation takes less points than the initial one and you used only banked or borrowed points for the initial reservation. You would not be able to bank the "saved" points but would need to use them before the end of the use year. And if you had used current use year points, you could run into banking window deadlines for the "saved" points, depending on the timing of the new reservation, your use year and number of points in your contract. In your case, however, your new reservation is likely to need more points, unless you downsize the room, so the above caveats are just for future reference.
Good luck on getting your preferred resort!

Thanks for your help. I'll call in the morning. Keeping my fingers crossed...
