Hey Everyone!!!

This has been keeping me up at night. I need advise or past experience please.

Because I take online college classes even through we will be on vacation I will still have work to do. Therefor I need to bring my laptop and school books. I have a laptop backpack that I love. It only really holds the one book and laptop but with plenty of other smaller pockets I can use for camera and charges and such. I wont be using a purse. I need to still pack another back for the normal, change of clothes and things incase there is a luggage problem. Also my daughter will be with me and she will have her own backpack with a change of clothes and stuff to do on the plane. Since I already have my backpack am I limited to a small item?

I found a bag at old navy. Its just a shoulder back that opens up. Plenty of room inside to put clothes and a few things. But it does get wide since its just really a fabric bag. (I hope that makes sense to someone). Would I be ok with that bag also? I can definitly put one under my seat and then one above.

Please tell me to stop worrying and Ill be ok.

Thanks!!!!!

Carrie

The size of any one piece of carry-on luggage will not be used as a determining factor with regard to allowing you an "extra". You simply aren't allowed an extra.

The allowance itself varies by airline. American Airlines is typical with regard to domestic airlines, and they allow one 45" (l+w+h) carry-on plus one personal item (from a specific list). Spirit Airlines is one of the few that limit you to just one carry-on and no personal items.

For most airlines, a computer bag/backpack will count as your personal item. You can also have a carry-on in addition to that. Check the Jet Blue website for specifics on description of personal items and limits on size of the carry-on you take in addition.

My guess is that the both the backpacks you were describing would count as "personal items," so you can carry them on as your 2 items.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

I did go back and re-read jetblue's site. And looked at the measurements. I think I will be ok. I can put my laptop backpack up above. The other bag since its just fabric will go under my seat. Then my daughter will have her backpack. Should work out ok.

Thanks!!!!

You'll be fine with what you have on JetBlue. They are great!!

I don't know about JetBlue. I'm flying US Airways tonight and explained the situation to them -- I have the same exact situation, a regular backpack and a laptop backpack. The agent wasn't encouraging. She said that I may be forced to check one of the two at the gate, since a laptop backpack is more than just a laptop case.

This is only a rough guideline. Your "personal item" should be small enough that two of them would fit, side by side, one atop the other, or end to end, in a sizing frame that the airline may have next to the gate podium.
