Question about cancelling an ADR

So if I book am ADR, and for some reason can't make it and have to cancel...is there is penalty?

It depends on the place. I know Cinderella's Castle and Akershus both have a penalty. I cannot say for any other place, but when I called to book Akershus they took my credit card # over the phone and if I do not show or cancel during a certain time period I will get charged.

I've booked a few and then decided to go elsewhere however I do call and cancel as a courtesy. I know many times I've called to book something and there's nothing, then call again a few weeks later and got what I wanted. So I'm thinking people do book and cancel.
