We logistically will not be able to go to Disney every year. How long can you bank your points with Disney? In otherwords, would it be possible or make sense to buy low points (50-75) and gather them up for a few years? What's the longest you can bank before you need to use them? Realistically we'll only be going there every 2-4 yrs.

Thank you!
Melanie

You can bank points once and then borrow from next UY. For example, we had 50 points banked from 07, 50 current 08 points and could borrow all 50 from 09 for a total of 150 on a 50 point contract. Borrowed points expire in the UY they are borrowed into and banked points expire at the end of the next UY. So, you can only have 3 years worth of points at one time. Did I explain that well or just muddy the waters? Hope that helps.

i believe you can bank into the following use year and they would have to be used by the end of that use year you banked them into. In other words if you banked 08 poaints into 09 they would expire in 09.

OK so if I'm understanding correctly it seems liek we'd have to go every 3 yrs to make it worth it? Or somehow learn how to rent out the unused points?

Example:
If we had 75pts a year...

and wanted to travel in 2010, we'd have 225pts to use in 2010.

09 - bank the 75 pts
10 - 75 new points
11 - borrow 75 pts

So now 2011 pts are gone...

2012 - bank the 75pts
2013 - 75 pts
2014 - borrow the 75 pts

Travel again in 2013 using another 225pts

Just did the math and figuring we go 10times over the next 40 yrs with 75pts at Saratoga Springs, looks like we'd be spending approx $280/night. (Figuring in current owners fees) So not bad if we were able to swing a 2 bedroom each time. Hmmm, something to think about. We're currently timeshare owners (not DVC) so I'm going to see how difficult it is to trade INTO a Disney property next year and guess I'll take it from there to decide what to do!

THANKS!

Can you sell or rent out banked points? Using Picabos example what if he banked points in 2012 then something happened in 2013 and he couldn't go until 2014? Could he then bank 2013 points? If so, what would happen to the 2012 points?

(technically, you can't sell or rent "points" at all. you can only rent reservations made with those points.) with that out of the way, they could rent a reservation in 2013 made with those banked pts.

if they forgot and didn't do anything at all with their banked pts from 2012, they would expire at the beginning of their 2014 UY and be worthless. (if they didn't miss the banking window, the 2013 pts could still be banked into 2014, regardless.)

Ah, and there lies the problem.

There are 3 concerns for small point owners.

1. You must be more careful banking/borrowing.
2. You probably can't double book.
3. The AP discount may be irrelevant.

The key is to be very sure that you can go to WDW sometime during the UY that you bank and borrow into, and to make your ressies for the 1st half of your UY in case something happens. That gives you a good cushion to cancel and rebook.

The double booking comes up if you are not sure if you will need a 1bdrm or 2bdrm. Some folks will book both and drop the ressie they don't need. Small point owners probably can't do that. Unfortunately, you can't just drop the studio off of a 2 bdrm, and stay in a 1 bdrm. You have to make a new ressie and go to the back of the line.

Picabo - We have had a lot of success trading into DVC through II using Marriott weeks and ACs from Marriott weeks. Just need to be flexible on your timing and look for the low periods for DVC or plan far ahead. Also, you usually get OKW or SSR if you want 2BRs. We did get a 1BR OKW mid-December last year, and this year got May (2BR SSR for flower show), October (2BR OKW for F&W), and November (1BR OKW just for us). Put your request in early with II and you should have luck!
