Encountered strange situation during SSR stay ( will post more on stay later) and wondered if this was common construction?

Do all Dvc units that are lock offs have the breaker box in the one bedroom side that also controls studio portion?
During our trip around 11:00 we plugged in our cell phone near the bed in our studio and the electricity went out for that portion of the room. THe bathroom, hall and kitchenette are still had electricity. We called the front desk and they sent someone from maintenance (after my husband looked for the breaker box themselves) He then informed my husband the breaker box was next door in someone's 1 bdr villa and the front desk would have to get permission with those guests. First of all the front desk called our room to see if they could have maintenance enter and I told them we were in the room with no electricity, after much (over 30 minutes) waiting for a response the maintenance guy told my husband they also called another wrong room (by this time it was midnight) Finally they got in touch with our neighbors who graciously let them in to flip the breaker box. I felt so bad! Are all the units arranged like this? And what if the room the breaker box was in had guests that would be gone all day would that mean no electricity? This seems like it could be a very sticky situation...Anyone else been down this road?

I never saw this problem on these boards before, I doubt if many even noticed where the breaker box was in the units. Maybe there is an electrician out there that noticed. A rare situation for sure, but not a good way to have to solve it. Maybe some of us will notice where the box is on our trips down to DVC next time.

In a BWV 1 bedroom, it's in the walk-in closet.

If the guest in the next room was not there, maintenance would use their pass key to get in.

Maintenance had to come into our one bedroom twice during our 7 nt stay in May. I guess the power in the studio lock off was going out and the only way to fix it was to come into our unit. The only bad thing was that it was after 11PM one night and I was already in bed, but the man was extremely apologetic. I actually felt sorry for him, so I didn't mind him seeing me in my jammies LOL. I guess they didn't think the location of the boxes all the way through huh? Oh well. I had no big problem with it.

I have never really paid attention to that. We usually are in a dedicated 2 bedroom at OKW, so it wouldn't be a problem.

Intersesting...

From what I remember at BCVs, the breaker box was in the closet in the 1 bedroom also. Can't remember ever seeing one in a studio!

LucyLou&BobWho. was your stay also at SSR?

Maybe they're having trouble already there with the electric work? How odd it happened to you, too!

Yep, we were at SSR. Maintenance wasn't too happy with the way the boxes were set up. One guy told me the design was "crazy". But as Lucy said, both times the maintenance guys were really apologetic and friendly. I felt sorry for them.

Stephanie! ROFL! :D I posted about this in my trip report! Which room were you in? We were one of the rooms they called when they were trying to figure out which breaker box needed to be reset! This was Wednesday or Thursday night if I remember correctly...they called us around 11:30pm.

The poor manager dealt with my disoriented husband (we'd been sleeping for a while) for a few minutes on the phone...and Glenn tried to check the breaker himself. It was locked. Then we had a little craziness verifying that it was actually the front desk calling and not some kook wanting to get in our room... we waited for the maintenance guy to show up at our door (and prayed that he didn't wake the kids sleeping on the couch). We waited 20 minutes or so (turned on Leno by that point) and no one ever showed! DH finally called back and had a hard time getting someone at the actual front desk. He was looking for the female night manager he'd spoken to earlier...which caused some confusion because it turns out that the manager's name is actually *John* (oops).

When we finally got to talk to him, he was embarrassed to admit that they had the *wrong* 1BR lockoff! So I guess they had to wake someone else up! It was really not a big deal (kids stayed asleep)...we had a good laugh at the manager incident and went back to bed. I just wondered when they were going to call to tell us they didn't need us! They did offer to buy us breakfast the next morning...which we took advantage of at AP.

Wow...when I re-read that post, I realized how discombobulated (sp?) I sounded. I guess I was in a hurry. I made a few edits for clarification. :D

Wow....they didn't offer us anything. Actually Lucy and I were laughing about it. I told her I was going to negotiate the deal next time. See what we could get from the front desk AND the studio! "Give us breakfast or you have to stay in the dark".

:p

The maintenance guys were great about not waking the kids.

We were in 2734 from 5/22-5/29.

Bob...they were very kind to offer...I was pleasantly surprised. And you know what...it worked out in their favor because breakfast at AP is excellent and we'll definitely go back next time (we usually eat bkfst in the room).

Sounds like an electrical problem in 2736...that's where Stephanie was...and also whoever was next door to LucyLou back in May.

I guess they just called us due to a typo or misreading the room numbering.

LucyLouandBob were in 1BR 2734 (3rd floor building 1) back in May.
We were in 1BR 2434 (4th floor building 2) last week. Same "space" on the floorplan...different floors AND buildings!
Maybe we'll hear from whoever was in 2734 last week...it had to be almost midnight before they got their call.

LOL KNWVIKING - just make sure its the *right* neighbor. ;) It could backfire on you!

Sammie...the boxes are definitely locked. So even if the power in your own villa goes out...maintenance will still have to come in and open it. Too bad they didn't put the breaker boxes in a centrally located area on each floor so folks wouldn't have to interrupt their vacation when a problem arises.

Very definitely bad planning.

We had this problem at OKW in a studio a few years back. I have 2 dd's and it was during the morning rush to get ready & out the door for EE. Coffee pot & blow drying at the same time weren't a good idea. We didn't loose power in the whole room, just the bathroom & kitchenette area. Maintenance went to the 1bd we were connected to and the occupants had their "Do Not Disturb" sign out. We weren't able to get power back before we left the room for the day, but it was fixed when we got back from the parks.

KWEAVER- I can't believe it was actually a dis friend- how funny! I'm glad ya'll got free breakfast! Yea the front desk told maintenance the husband would be right out and no one ever showed, finally after a while my dh and maintenance called the front desk and they fessed up they called the wrong room.
So we know this is the set up at OKW, How about the other resorts? Anyone?

Really does sound like poor planning. You're kind of at the mercy of your neighbor in order to get your power back.
Especially if they have the do not disturb sign out....could be quite a hassle.
I feel sorry for the maintenance crew - I wonder how often they have this problem crop up.
