My family of 4 will be doing an Alaskan cruise next summer (booking soon). My MIL has decided that she might want to join us which I have no problem with. We want an ocean view room but her budget will not allow for that. My question is, is it allowed that we book one oceanview and one standard and put one of the kids in her stateroom to decrease the cost? And actually, I'm sure a couple of the nights the kids will be sleeping with grandma to give mommy and daddy some alone time.

Is this possible? It's $900 less if we put one of the kids in her room rather than her have her own stateroom.

Certainly you may book one of your kids in with grandma. One thing, that child will have to attend the muster drill for the room that he/she is booked in. And, grandma will have to sign a paper allowing you to take your child off the ship without her.

So room assignments are essentially irrelivant aside from the muster drill?

Well, the KTTW card that each individual uses to get off and on the ship are assigned to the the room they are booked in. As are any charges done on that card. And gratuities.

That's not an issue since my kids aren't old enough to make charges and if she/they leave the ship, we're all leaving the ship. Thank you!

If your child isn't going to make charges, be sure to have the charging benefits turned off. I'm not sure, but you should check into the checking them in/out of the kid's club. Could be that grandma will need to authorize you to pick up your own child.

We are a family of 5 and do this all the time to decrease costs, put two people in an interior and three in an ocean view or verandah hang out all the time in the room with a view. Just make sure your stateroom hosts know and can put an additional life vest in your room if your child is not sleeping in Grandma's every night.

Absolutely - sounds like a good idea to me. A few details to handle later (KTTW card charging, muster drills, etc) but not something you should be concerned with now since they are just details to work, not show stoppers. It's almost a "no brainer" to do what you're thinking, then work out sleeping details later (even after you board).

If you want both of your kids to (some nights) to sleep in your cabin. Make sure the cabin you book sleeps 4. Some of the veranda cabins only sleep 3.

Thank you! I've never paid for/booked a cruise before so I didn't know if that was frowned upon or even allowed. I appreciate all of the answers!

If I was going to do that I would book you and both kids in the interior room and your DH and MIL in the ocean view for 2 reasons. 1 - in case of an actual emergency if you are at 2 different muster stations you'll feel a lot better having your kids, not Grandma having them. 2 - I believe the 3rd person in the room will be less expensive in the inside than it would be in the OV, you can still get on board and figure out keys etc but I think this should save you a few more bucks. Just my $.02

Great point! Now that I know this is done all the time, this is what I will do. I actually priced it out and it's the same price to book a verandah! I will book myself and the kids in the inside and husband and MIL in the Verandah. We'll be sure to book a 3 or 4 person capacity verandah. Thanks, everyone!

Once on another cruise line, our family was split and had two different muster stations (but close together). We asked to be put together and they said, "no problem." They switched it in the computer. Any experience on Disney doing this?

A family we met at a muster drill once was traveling with another family and sharing the room between them. Two of the rooms had a station portside and the third had a station starboard. This situation has been reported several times here.

I doubt it. We had two rooms (next door to each other) and our room mustered in the WDT, while our daugher's room mustered on deck (at the life boat).

But you certainly can ask.

Absolutely. All you have to do is ask. I would guess that lifeboat capacity would be a consideration for Disney, but I can't imagine if the staterooms have a different station that both boats would be full. Asking is free, though...give them a chance to make your trip a little better! I don't doubt at all that they'd try to make it happen.
