My family is a little behind and we are just now getting a blu-ray player for Christmas. It's my understanding that the blu-ray players will play dvds, but the dvd players will not play blu-rays. Is that correct??

Also, the girls are getting laptops for Christmas, so will the dvd player in the play the blu-rays? Probably a dumb question, but I'm getting confused. My oldest daughter wants the Eclipse DVD and I'm thinking of getting the blu-ray/dvd combo so she could watch it on the blu-ray player and also watch on her laptop if she wants. Does that sound right?

Otherwise, what's the point of getting the combo pack?:confused3

DVDs will play in Blu-Ray players, but Blu-Rays will not play in DVD players (laptops included).

What you said about getting your daughter the combo pack is spot on!

Not sure if you have Netflix or not, but with a Blu Ray you can also stream tv shows, movies, documentaries, etc through it. In other words you don't have to wait for a disc in the mail.

We love streaming stuff this way.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I was just going to buy the blu-ray, but I know she'd like having the ability to watch it on her laptop in her room.

Thanks again!

So, with just a regular blu ray player you can stream movies, or do you have to somehow have a internet connection to be able to do that?

I'm sorry...should have been more clearer. You do need a wireless connection.

You can go to Netflix.com and read more about it there. I am not the most tech savvy person!!!:)

I will do that - it sounds like something our family would love!

Thanks again!

It really is great for only $8 a month. There are literally thousands of things to watch via streaming.

Have a great holiday!

Only some Blu-ray players can stream from Netflix. Some can, some can't. If you get one that can, you need to connect it to the Internet. If you have a wireless router, you need to get a wireless adapter for the Blu-ray player or buy one with it built in. If you have a wired network, you'll need to plug the player into the network.

And after all that, you'll also need to be sure that your Internet connection is capable. There are some slow broadband connections out there that support only inferior streams from Netflix, and some services cap utilization which, when using Netflix streaming, especially their HD streams, can be reached rather quickly.
