question about banked points

I just banked 131 points into 2009 UY (we had DP, so we didn't need to use all of our 2008 points). we always travel in September, but DH mentioned something the other night about possibly taking a long weekend trip in January to use up some of these extra points we have. the 7 month mark would be coming up next month, so i'd like to try to get a reservation made, but since we have never travelled in january before, i am not 100 certain that this will be doable for me with work.

so my question is, when i make my reservation, does it matter whether they use the banked points or the 2009 points?

I would use the banked points since they will expire at the end of your 2009 use year. You could bank the 2009 points into 2010 if you don't use them.

I agree. Use the banked points first. You never know when your travel plans may change and you don't want those points to expire because you couldn't use them.

not meaning to hijack your thread but I was just wondering if someone could tell me what the timeframe window is for banking points? I know to reserve you can do so at your home resort at 11 months, or another resort at 7 but what are the time windows for banking points?

Let say I have a August use year and I'm getting 150 points on August 1st 2009. How long do I have to decide if I want to use them in that use year or bank them and save them until the next use year?

MS is supposed to automatically use banked points first if any are available.

But it's always a good idea to do a brief recap with the MS CM before you hang up so that you know for sure exactly where the points came from. This is especially true if you have more than one home resort.

You can bank as many points as you want, as often as you want, during the first 8 months of your Use Year.

For example, our UY is October, so our banking deadline is May 31. Therefore, I just banked all of our unused points today.

I agree. Use the banked point first for the next reservation booking. Those points, now in 2009 UY can no longer be moved. It's now "use 'em or lose 'em" scenario. The actual 2009 UY points could be banked into 2010 UY if there are points left over by that next banking deadline.

My advice, general MS will use the banked point first but be sure to specify - especially if wait listing. There have been instances where they don't automatically use them and people have been burned by not specifying. In fact, I just confirmed where my banked points ended up on the 3 reservations I booked after banking. It doesn't show that level of detail on the confirmations or online.

If you have an Aug UY, you have until March 31st to bank the points. That is one of the reasons why traveling during those first 8 months, your banking months, is a good idea.
