Question about ASL in WDW

Hi,

My name is Stephanie. I am 17 and I have a few questions about ASL in WDW. In the last month or two I have started a class in ASL in a school near where I live. (Well, not all that close but that is what public transportation is for. lol) I have always had an extreme interest and fascination in the language and I am truly enjoying what I am learning in my class. I am also toying with the ideas of becoming an interrupter or teacher for the deaf. As of now I am able to hold converstation and understand most of what is said to me but by the time I will be in Disney I should be a bit more advanced.

OK now that I have given everyone a little back round on me, here are my questions. My first question is, as it is not appropriate for me to request the sign language interrupting on the days I am going to the parks since I am of no need for the services, are there any specific days that the services are offered without a request?

My second question, which relies on the answer to the first, if they do offer the services does anyone think they will give me a problem if I ask to sit in the section that will obviously be designated for the ASL interpretation, even though I have no disability?

I want to thank anyone who finds it in their heart to help me out with the answers, lol. I am very shy so it took a lot for me to get up the nerve to ask such trivial question, so again I thank you in advance.

Stephanie   :earsgirl:

Stephanie when you arrive at the parks go to Guest Services and ask for a schedule of interpreted shows. As long as the area is not filled the interpreters will have no problem with you watching them. You may want to sit behind the area if there are a large number of deaf guests.
I am hard of hearing and an interpreting student as well. I use interpreters when needed as a support because I cannot hear clearly in many situations and I hate to wear my hearing aids in the parks especially when it is hot. I hear pretty well with the aids except in very noisy situations like conferences so I still need interpreters there. Guess conferences will not be something I will be interpreting. :)
Also please learn to spell interpreter :) You definitely don't want to be an interrupter. Hugs. Joke.

I can't answer any of your questions, but I wanted to welcome you to the disABILITIES Board.
One of the frequent posters to the disABILITIES Board, Talking Hands, is well qualified to answer all your questions. I'm sure she will be along soon to give you some assistance and encouragement.

Added Note: Lisa, you must ahve been typing at the same time as I was. When I started typing, I was the only reply. When I actually saw my post, you had beaten me to posting.

First I want to thank you for your reply.

Second I want to say I am so embarrassed. I am a Virgo, so on top of being shy, I am also a perfectionist, and I don't like to be wrong lol. That being said I want to clarify that my spelling is atrocious to begin with.(which makes fingerspelling things to my teacher horrible. My teacher is deaf so I have no other choice but to finger spell words I don't know.) So when I finished writing my post I copied it and pasted into an AOL mail and ran it through spell check. Just for the record I spelled it right the first time and the spell check changed it.

OK i just wanted to clear that up.
Stephanie
I think I will go back to begin a lurker, you get a lot less embarassment that way. lol :(

Hello Eeyore Addict,

I want to welcome you too, and although this is a bit OT, I also want to welcome you as anoter Vergo bad speller!:o

Please don't lurk forever. Remember - unfortunatly there are some people with so little imagination that they can only spell a word one way!!:) (joke everyone)

I want to encourage you to not be a lurker for long too. :)
A lot of spelling mistakes are made because the spell checker doesn't know the word and substitutes something else. Now you know your spell checker doesn't know "interpreter".
Some of us who are usually good spellers make LOTS of mistakes typing on the computer. (Just look at any of my posts and you will see). Our fingers get ahead of themselves and type letters out of order. Or maybe there are just little computer gremlins that put spelling mistakes in after we have correctly typed it.;)
Anyway, don't let spelling keep you lurking. Come on in and enjpoy yourself.
:D :D :D

PS> This is the one board where off topic (OT) is OK. As long as it relates somehow to WDW or disabilities or travel or making people more comforatble or equipment or...... it's OK here.

I was only teasing. It is just that it is such an great place on words and the Deaf would love that mistake. It was really funny.
Go for the interpreting and deaf ed.

welcome to the boards i just wanted to say hi, Im an interpreteur for the deaf here in england(BSL user), i have a deaf son, and my husband is now losing his hearing(he's 34). Good luck with your learning of ASL and also in your chosen profession that you seek.
