Well, we haven't even closed on our SSR resale and here I am already thinking about adding on!!:rotfl2:

However, we purchased 170 points, feeling it would be enough for us, but ideally we'd like a hundred more or so (ok, well, maybe 150! LOL!). We wanted to wait and see a few things before we got more points - first, we've not seen BLT or AKV and wanted to explore them first, and also, we were doing this in 'chunks' that we could afford and not finance. Anyway, I wanted to know about adding on, I'm completely confused. How does it work if you do it resale vs. through disney? Is it easier through disney because they will just have it all in the same use year- is there anything else that they do that makes it better to go with them? I imagine it's trickier to add on resale because you would want to get the same use year, right? But if you are patient, especially in this market, that seems easy enough to find. Is there anything else to pay attention to or I should understand? What is the good and bad with adding on at a different resort?

Thank you for any help!

Hi: Everything is much faster and easier (in my opinion) dealing directly with Disney. It is also more expensive, so that may be a deciding factor with you. We have 3 contracts with Disney directly and are waiting to close on a resale. When we did our initial purchase, we were in the system the same day we placed a deposit. When we did the 2 add-ons with Disney, it was also immediate. With resale, it will take 1-2 weeks after closing to be in Disney's system. If you have contracts at different resorts, you will only have the 11 month priority on the available points at that particular resort; you cannot combine them. You can bank and borrow to make use of a smaller contract. We waited for BWV and bought in sight unseen without any regrets. Many people do like to stay at a resort they are considering purchasing. Keep yourself on the e-mail lists of the realtors; there are some good contracts to be had.

You sound just like me! I bought in through resale with the plan to add on at BLT next fall, after I had a chance to visit when I went on my trip in August. Well, I closed on 2/2/09 and added on at BLT only 5 days later!!!! No waiting for me!!!!!!

The benefits of having 2 resorts is that it allows you to have the 11 month booking advantage at both resorts, using the number of points that you own at each (ie: if you added on 100 points at AKL, you would be able to book AKL at 11 months, using those 100 points, and book at 11 months at SSR using your 170). Of course, at 7 months, the points can be combined and used at any DVC resort.

Some people enjoy split stays and having 2 home resorts allow for this. Others buy at resorts for specific times of year when the 11 month booking advantage is important. For example, those that visit Food & Wine in October every year, might want a small add on at BWV or BCV so that they can book there at 11 months.

Adding on at Disney is definitely faster and easier, but most likely more expensive. You do not pay closing costs through Disney and if you are financing (50 points or more), getting that in place is pretty easy. When I added on at BLT, I had the points in 2 hours and booked reservations that next day! You are not limited to a set number of points and can add on however many you want and Disney will give you the same UY as you currently have.

With resale, you may pay closing costs, the time frame is much longer (4 - 6 weeks), and you have to search for the resort, UY, and number of points that fits your needs. It may take longer to find the contract that is just right.

You sound like me. :rotfl2: My first add-on was less than 1.5 months from my initial purchase. All of my purchases have been through Disney. However, whenever I decide to do my next purchase (BCV -> I probably want to watch how the economy is doing a bit), I will probably go through resale. The trick will be making sure that they add it to my current master contract instead of as a new master contract.
