Question about adding DDP to a DVC reservation?

I everyone. We are headed to WDW in May of 2016. My overly generous inlaws are using their DVC points to pay for a 2 bedroom, savannah view suite at AKV. As a "Thank-You" we are considering adding and paying for the DDP for our group. We will be 4 adults and 2 kids (disclaimer...we never get the DDP and find that TIW is a better use of our money but we will be doing almost all buffet/character meals so it makes sense this time). My questions are...do you pay for the dining plan when you add it or when you check in? Can you use Disney gift cards to pay for the DDP? I ask because it would be easiest for me to save a little at a time by purchasing gift cards. That way I know the money is securely allocated and I can't "borrow" from it for other reasons. Thanks in advance for any/all advice!!

You pay for it when you add it. You must add it at least 48 hours before arrival. You can use gift cards to pay for it if you call in to add it. However, only the member can call in to add it.

Thanks for the reply!! Sounds like this is totally doable for us. I would really like to "surprise" them with the Dining Plan. If I have all of the money on Disney Gift Cards it sounds like my father in law just needs to call about a week before we go and spend about an hour on the phone reading all of my gift cards to Member Services.

You can add the DDP when you make your reservation online or you can go online if you have already made the reservation and add it. We use a Disney rewards credit card for all of our Disney purchases including dues.
