Question about a coat for you Northern folks

DD18 attends college in upstate NY. She is (and I am) a Texas girl through and through. She will spend quite a bit of time outside this winter,though, and I bought this coat for her:

It's Land's End, and I know they're good. They rate it for some pretty cold weather (-10 to +10F). I received the jacket... and it seems VERY light weight! It is waterproof and windproof. She will also have snow pants and all the appropriate long underwear.

Does this look like a good coat for her needs?

I have always preferred a coat that's a little longer. In college, my coat went to my knees. Walking across campus in the winter can be pretty cold, and jeans seem to make it worse.

Not sure why she needs snow pants?

I feel bad saying this because you've already ordered it but ........ it does not look warm enough to me. It is 'warmer' rated (their middle ranking) by Lands End and not 'warmest.' Also, I definitely agree with the previous poster. My DD will be a college student in the fall in that area in the fall and she wanted "something that keeps my butt from getting cold!" I just got her this from Lands End for Christmas and she loves it! She particularly likes that it has a removable hood.

Where in Upstate NY, as in just north of NYC, Central NY (ie. Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse) or Upstate as in Canton, etc?

Personally, outside of NYC or just north of NYC, that jacket doesn't seem all that warm, or warm enough. I do give you a lot of props though for at least not buying a NorthFace jacket.

That doesn't look warm enough to me. Maybe if she were just running from building to car etc. but not for walking across campus. I agree with the first poster about a longer length, that really makes a big difference ( along with hat, scarf, mittens ) Upstate NY is seriously cold!

I get all my winter coats from Lands End. But I agree with the previous posters, I would have got a parka instead, and something with more insulation.

I live in NEPA, and while it does not get nearly as cold as upstate NY, I would go with a longer, down-filled LE coat. I have several of their coats, and my favorite is the knee-length, down-filled coat with the removeable hood. It is very warm, and the hood is fantastic for those morning when the wind is blowing. It's also very light-weight and can be easily folded up and carried. I've washed it many times, and it's in excellent shape. I'd definitely go for something longer with a hood.

I have this exact coat and it is very, very warm. I stood outside for hours helping my husband in 25 degree weather and did not feel it! And it looks really good on too!

Here I am thinking that the coat should be fine for Upstate NY because it doesn't get THAT cold there . Being she is from Texas I would say get her a warmer coat but most people around here would wear something like that-layered with warm clothing under it too.

Could you send her the money?
Right now I know our ski stores or outdoor stores have huge mark down on the winter coats.
She could get a $400-$500 winter coat probably for $150 and it would last her the next 4 years. I had 4 kids and now all in their 20's, and we used to invest pretty good in winter coats and tried to get at least 2-3 seasons out of coats. We always bought them in Jan./Feb. when there were huge mark downs.

I could do that, but she doesn't have a car. That's a good idea, though. I'll see if she has anyone that could take her to a store. There is an outlet mall within an hour of her school.

I have a Squall Jacket. It's warm, but not THAT warm! I don't think it's enough for upstate NY. The second one looks MUCH better, and it's cute too!

I actually have the LE Squall and think it is plenty warm enough (I'm in PA).

I use it every day as well as for skiing...in colder climates.

If I remember correctly they have a parka (a bit longer, covers the butt) version of the Squall...if so you may want to try that.

I wouldn't get a down coat... too bulky!

My daughter is in school in Upstate New York and that is the exact coat that she has and she walks quite a ways from her house to school each day.
