You can get an extra key card at Guest Services this way you can open the cabin your not assigned to.
Two tips: if you have two key cards back to back the tap to open the doors won’t work.
Make sure you have the key cards with the names printed on them every time you get on and off the ship. Everyone needs their key card even kids. Anyone 18 and over also needs a government issued photo ID.

Somewhere I found a list cabins and their muster stations. For example, I know we're out on deck (ugh) for the safety drill on our next cruise. I'm simply hoping if our group is closest to the lifeboats we get off the ship first in case of emergency. At least that's what I'm going with.

Everyone wants to be the first off, but that would depend on the emergency -- your side of the ship might be underwater and need to use a different life boat. I realize that's a very(!) unlikely situation so I probably shouldn't have brought it up.

Just saying.... My DH and I get 2 connected rooms for the four of us. We'd rather not have the boys alone together in one room (as we don't want to keep the neighbours up with their noise), and we don't want to deal with fighting over who gets the big bed. So DH and I each take a queen bed to ourselves (ah, rare comforts) and the boys take either the bunk in a respective room or murphy or pullman. It keeps down the fighting and DH gets to spread out and sleep in, while I like to get up and start a day of shipboard indulgences.

Just because you share a bed at home, doesn't mean you have to share on the ship.

Another "just be aware" tip: If Dad (in room 1) wants to take minor child (in room 2) off the ship without Mom (in room 2), then Mom needs to sign a permission slip for Dad to do so. Same thing the other way around... if Mom wants to take minor child (in room 1) off without Dad, Dad must sign a permission slip allowing her to do so.

Also keep in mind if there's 4 of you split into 2 rooms with one adult and one child per room, you will be paying the rate of 4 adults regardless of the kid's ages. Just FYI.

Yes, thank you! There is a lot to think about. The last time we cruised was almost 15 years ago. We are looking at all the options, including RCI, Carnival, etc. We found an ocean view suite on Carnival with a credit (onboard credit or Amazon credit) and a waived deposit. We have never sailed on DCL, though, so it would be nice to make that happen. I will read the comparison threads for Carnival and RCI, as well as Cruise Critic, as well as the ship reviews.

Whenever I cruised with my parents before I turned 18 my brother and I were always in a cabin next door or across the hall from my parents. The cabins are tiny so fitting 4 people in them is a tight fit, it made for a much nicer vacation. We didn't sail on Disney, but as long as you have an adult registered in the room you are fine. It's nice with a cruise since you can pick your specific cabins unlike a hotel and guarantee being near each other.

The rooms onboard the Disney ships are larger the same (or similar) category rooms onboard other cruise lines. On Disney, you can't book kids under 18 only in a room. You must have an adult in each room (on paper). But, DCL doesn't do a bed check, you can sleep in whichever room works for your party.

On some other cruiselines, you can book minors in rooms separately from the parents, as long as it's right next door or immediately across the hallway.
