Queen Elizabeth funeral and looking forward

A. Because you can be political free of a country, that doesn't mean cultural free.
As the UK was a superpower in the US formative years, with lots of the rich people who build the US were from or had strong ties with the UK, they kept customs of the UK and looked at the UK to how to behave socially. The UK mattered.
When people from the US go to Europe what is the one place they all go to: London.

B. Language, as these royals speak the sams language, it is much easier to find out what they are up to than the other royals in the world.

C. They are very good at drama.
My royal family is incredibly boring. Even in my language there is only a handful of tv drama's about their lives. And they are dull as well.
From Henry 8th, Charles II, Elisabeth I, there are so many good stories that make for excellent dramatization. People want to see these stories over and over again. That increases the interest in the current royal family. Who do a good job at drama themselves.

D. Because the press is really on it. So you are seeing it everywhere.

E. I think you will find plenty of people in this thread who are from or living in the UK, Canada and Europe. Less US than in other threads.
Your answer to A makes me laugh - my family has been to Europe over a dozen times, and we've been in London once (the layover at the airport doesn't count for me!)

B - that might have been true decades ago, but I can get everything on the internet translated quite easily.

C - I could live my entire life happily free of other people's drama, so I don't get the draw for this one, but it's true for so many that I have to agree.

D- same here - the press drives so much of the fake drama (E2's death is not fake drama) that I don't even watch most of the news anymore.

E - no idea, should we do a roll call?

Congratulations, you are not average.

Honest question. Is there something you would add to the list? Why are you reading along on the thread?

The article from this morning said that he sat behind Harry and Meghan to overhear what they were talking about.
I think it's more likely he was there to help insure all went as planned. Same as Lady Chatto next to them. (Making sure the Sussex were sitting in the seats reserved specifically for them.)

I’m not sure why you care that people care. :confused3

And if one doesn't care about the Queen, why they would click on a thread with her name as the title.

Exactly. When I see topics that I don't care about - I simply don't spend my time reading them. Or post only to ask other people why they care about a topic that I don't care about (because how dare they?) You are not forced to open threads that mystify you. True story.
It is because they are fascinated by people who are fascinated by something/someone.

Deep down, these 'why do you care'-people are just like us 😉 they just don't have their own thread.

Rightly or wrongly I've always assumed that your differing attitude to such subjects was due to having a Germanic background as your screen name has Oma (German for Granny) in it.
Nothing wrong with that, obviously, just something that I've noticed a number of times over the years.

I've watched more live TV these last couple of days than I have for quite a while.

I work in a school, and we've had an email this morning from the head teacher to say that the school will be closed on the day of the funeral. I'm glad as I really do want to watch.

@Deuey did you see the guard of honour from the tractor drivers in Aberdeen? So touching.

This link shows the line of succession for all of the immediate members of the royal family. If something were to happen to all of them, the succession then goes to the children of princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister. https://www.royal.uk/succession
I always thought Margaret got a raw deal due to stuffy protocol and sense of propriety. The least they can do is have her daughter Lady Sarah Chatto leapfrog her way up the ladder a bit.

And talk about stuffy and antiquated: Zara Tindall, Anne’s daughter, is listed as Mrs. Husband’s Name. Beatrice and Eugenie too, but at least their royal titles are named first. :sad2:

Well you may now call me the Viscount of Videlia.

Ah, I misunderstood your first post. When you said “granddaughter of a son of a reigning monarch”, I read that as the son’s granddaughter rather than (as I now understand you to mean), the granddaughter of the monarch, begotten by a son.

In other words, (from when the Queen was alive), I was thinking Princess Charlotte (Charles‘ granddaughter and the Queen’s great-granddaughter) but you meant Princess Beatrice (Andrew’s daughter and the Queen’s granddaughter).

So, it seemed like you were skipping over an entire generation.

I didn’t mean “skipping” in that sense, I meant in the use of the title Princess (see above). The reason that Anne isn‘t in the line of succession is that it isn’t retroactive - can you imagine how complicated that would be? And how many lives would be upended?

The only retroactive rule change I know of was in Sweden (I think) but in that case the two mainly affected were both small children (the Princess was born before the Prince, so was initially passed over but then the rule was changed). It may not have been fully retroactive, to be fair (maybe they only went back 3-4 years or whatever was needed for the Prince and Princess).
Anne is in the line of succession. The point was she was not shuffled closer to the top after the new Act in 2011. It was only for births after 2011.

Yes, I know. I mentioned it now being retroactive. I meant to say “didn’t move up in the line of succession”.

I’m not sure why you care that people care. :confused3
It seems that there are people who have nothing better to do with their limited, finite time than to go around telling people that they're wrong to care about certain topics and try to make themselves feel better by implying that they're too smart to care about them. It's pretty pathetic, really.

Of course what they're actually doing is trying to pick fights with the other posters.

Despite the sadness, I just love all the pomp and circumstance. Have had BBC World News on in the house since Thursday. Generally it’s mainly me that watches this sort of thing, but even DH, DD and DS have been interested and watching, too. (Scottish ancestry on their side! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿)

I am really impressed with how civil the people of the UK appear in all of these different areas. It’s really nice to see. It’s always been on my bucket list to visit someday, probably in retirement so we can stay for a while. My favorite book series growing up was the Herriot series (All Creatures Great and Small). I’ve always had an interest in all things UK, for some reason. And that includes our own US history. Where I live (New England) there is a lot of it, even literally in my own backyard, with many who remained loyal to the crown even after the American Revolution. (Not saying that’s good or bad, it just ‘was’ in some areas.) You cannot separate American history from its roots. Many things around us also have English names. Signs like the one below are all over the place. At any rate, it might help explain why some find the history fascinating, though you don’t have to have English roots or live in a historical area to enjoy it.

Largely I think it's just monarchy, they have it we don't. We're very far removed from a monarchy and all the titles, lines of succession, etiquette rules, and more hold some sort of interest here for at least some people. Although we have celebrities and let's be honest a lot of those outside the U.S. probably don't get our fascination with celebrities and their lives.

I can always count on the DIS to have the scoop here on the monarchy and I read with a semi-coherent understanding of the information vastly deferring to those here with much more knowledge and understanding. We were in Vegas when the news hit but I had checked this thread and saw it before it was announced all over. I told my husband and he was like "oh yeah sure that board has the info"...yes yes it does. And shortly thereafter he messaged me that yes it had been officially announced.

i really don't see why so many people care. Seems line there was a war a few years ago to be free of them.
There are SO many countries with monarchies, and nobody cares about them. Why is the UK different?
We were in Vegas when the news hit. Not too long after Resorts World (which our room at The Encore faced them) had on their side of the building (it is electronic) showed a picture of her and her date of birth and date of death.

It's huge news, and potentially quite impactful throughout the world politically speaking.

Their loss.
No kidding. It happens all the time on discussion boards, which of course makes me wonder, if they don't really care, why do they feel compelled to slam other people for caring? Nobody cares that you don't care, buddy. It's not like anybody's going to saay "Oh, he/she has said I shouldn't care, I better stop!" You're just making yourself look like a jerk. But they're just looking to argue with people.

Elizabeth was a major world figure who ruled for 70 years. Of course people are going to note her passing, it's called paying attention to world affairs. it's what adults do. And if you don't care then go read about something you do care about. You only have so much time to be alive, don't waste it on things you don't care about.
