Queen Elizabeth funeral and looking forward

William, Kate, Harry and Meghan are out at Windsor and looking at the flower tributes and then moved to greeting the crowds.
The BBC cameras are only on William and Kate.

*Edit* Ah, they have found the Sussexes again.
And after a minute back to Waleses
How very gracious of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Perhaps a gentle reminder to Harry of what he's lost? Hope to God the Markles were debugged before allowed near the RF.

Was watching one of the TV specials last night and it was mentioned that Charles proposed to another woman before Diana. And not Camilla. Her name is Amanda and she is a distant relative, related to Lord Mountbatten. She turned down the proposal, because she did not want the royal life in the spotlight. Very interesting and something I had never heard before.

They just hand them out like candy at Halloween over there then - no real meaning behind them, IMO. Or is it a control thing?
As mentioned in my post a page or so back. When you marry into the RF it comes with a title in NL as well. For the women it is always princess, for men only when they marry the heir to the throne. Women become queen when their spouse becomes king. Men become prince consort when their spouse becomes queen.

Like with the titles for the children of Harry and Meghan, there is a rule for everything when it comes to titles.

Diana was never a Princess. She was Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. Lady as she was a daughter of an Earl,

The only ladies that can used the title of Princess First name are girls born to the reigning monarch and the granddaughters of the sons of reigning monarchs.

You can never be created a prince or Princess by marriage or decree in the UK.

Question for the Canadians. Last few days during the talks on the BBC a frequent topic was about future of Commonwealth countries as recently Barbados went independent. They talk about will other countries follow in the coming years, and the focus was often on Australia. The prediction is that it might take a few years, but very likely Australia will want a president in the future and no longer a king in the UK.

What are the sentiments in Canada?

Should that be daughters? Because Charlotte (granddaughter of a son of the reigning Monarch at the time of her birth) was only given the title of princess by special decree from the Queen (same with Louis and the title Prince, actually).

And skipping over daughters of sons of the reigning Monarch is weird.

All sons and daughters of the monarch are born prince and princess.

I believe the grandchildren from daughters of the monarch (Princess Anne’s children for example) are not. Instead the Queen offered Mark Phillips a peerage so they would be be lady /lord (similar to Princess Margaret) and it was declined. This may have changed with the new succession rules.

I think an exception to the grandchildren rule was made to give William‘s children the title early as great grandchildren of the reigning monarch rather grandchildren.

As of this week Harry’s 2 children are now able to be called Prince and Princess as grandchildren of the monarch.

This has been changed fairly recently and Charlotte is now included in the line of succession, as well as the female grandchildren and other great-grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth. However, it seems like Anne (Charles’ sister, only daughter of the Queen) should have also been bumped up above her younger brothers (Andrew and Edward) and their children. Don’t know why, I’m sure someone knows. Anne, who’s called the Princess Royal, is supposedly the hardest working of all the RF. Not that it really matters at this point, because realistically, she’d never become queen.

So Princess Diana is wrong too? She should have been call Princess Charles?

But it wasn’t Princess Diana.

People may have referred to her as that but it was incorrect (as she herself said). She was Diana, Princess of Wales (just like Catherine is now).
Okay, now I'm confused.

As I understood it, Princess Diana was merely the affectionate name given her by the public but was not at all official.

She was never referred to as Lady Diana, Princess of Wales, I thought, but rather was Lady Diana Spencer before marriage, her title from birth, and designated Diana, Princess of Wales afterward. Interestingly, Diana was actually more English than Charles as the Spencers trace their line back to the 1400s in England.

At the divorce, she was granted the right to continue using Diana, Princess of Wales but did not retain the HRH since it came to her by marriage. Divorce removed that title.

Am I correct?

I haven't seen this officially anywhere yet.
I did see the updated LOS. The California children were listed only as Miss and Master.

Parents may choose not to use the titles. Prince Edward chose not to with Louise and James.

Yes correct.
But she never lost the Lady. It was hers for life as daughter of an Earl. Both her sisters still use it. Just overshadowed by Princess of Wales.

Woman cannot pass down titles. Only exception I have heard of was Lord Mountbatten’s daughter.

And you cannot just be given the title Princess. You must be of royal blood and born into the family not married into it.
What you can do is be Princess Husband’s name.
Princess Michael of Kent is an good example of this. Wonder why cousin Mike never given a peerage? Lol.

As for daughters of the monarch getting titles - Queen had 7 paternal cousins from grandfather George V - 4 Princes, 1 Princess.
Other 2 were sons of her Aunt Princess Mary and they did not get titles even if they were the oldest grandchildren of the monarch.

Poor Princess Alexandra was the Queen’s cousin and best friend. She must be hurting this week.

It wasn’t retroactive. It started with new births.

I thought that was the case but was confused because I didn't recall her being referred to once married as Lady Diana, Princess of Wales.

Thank you for specifying.

Princess Anne and Prince Edward chose not to use the titles for their children. MM announced on the Oprah interview that her children were denied these titles. This was untrue but fit her agenda. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds since The Queen has passed away.
