Queen Elizabeth funeral and looking forward

I saw the repost last night on twitter..
“Location location location” and “If I were..”

After I stopped laughing at the absurdity of it… I thought, not invited for a reason 🙄
There is virtually no chance Biden or anybody else was seated based on a first-come basis. Absolutely everything about that service was orchestrated down to the last tittle. Whatever the rationale for the seating chart, I'm sure arriving late(er) had no bearing - he would have been ushered to his assigned seat.

None of the former presidents were invited. They were invited to attend a "Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II" at the Washington National Cathedral.

I think that service isn't until tomorrow. This looks like a pic from Bush Sr. Funeral. Notice Biden is in the second row - before he was president.

Canada hosted a national service like this yesterday too. Apparently all our living former Prime Ministers were invited to London, but two of them (Brian Mulroney & Joe Clark) did not go. They were both in attendance at the Ottawa service.

That is an old photo from a past event.

Details on the Service of Thanksgiving tomorrow (Sept 21st at 11am ET) are here:

A Certain ex US President posted on his fake Twitter account that had he still been president he would have been seated in a better location. Same article noted that Biden was seated there mainly due to the order in which people arrived. and reminded people that other Royal houses and commonwelth countries had better seating and that of course Canada had a right to have more delegates than the US as the Queen was their head of state.

As for Biden.. well sometimes taking the bus is faster than driving oneself. lol
So basically......Westminster Abbey is like MK rather than Epcot or HS?

Was it really 17 vehicles? I have no idea, just wanted to check .
It's possible I miscounted; I got that number myself from watching film. 16 US-made vehicles with their lights on rolling together, with a Met police car bringing up the rear. I've seen his entourage often enough to recognize the cars; they are distinctive.

I don't buy the implication that Biden had to settle for a different seat; I'm confident that was his pre-assigned position. I would bet that he was where he was not because of any intention to judge/slight the US or Biden himself, but because the Secret Service had to stay close to him, and the planners probably didn't want those anonymous guys in black suits and earpieces lingering up front.

I ran across this article from a Welsh newspaper that seems to say that an investiture of some kind is being planned, but that it is probably at least a year away: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/how-prince-wales-investiture-could-24993849

Regardless of the picture (now removed), the point remains that none of the former presidents were invited to Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

OK? There will be a lovely service in the US tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure most former US presidents understood and respected the limited seating. Because being sort of petty really doesn't honor the ever gracious deceased queen.

Personally I think the coronation for King Charles will be in late April / early May. Here in the UK we have a Mayday bank holiday which is on the first Monday of May. In 2023 it is actually 1st May, so I think an extra bank holiday will be given and the coronation will be on Friday 28th April. I think end May / June will be avoided as that was the Queen's time. It will be too cold to have crowds of people on the streets much before April (and even after then, being England the weather is never guaranteed!). Regardless of how small an affair King Charles will want the coronation to be, there will still be thousands of people in London wanting to celebrate. I think Charles has gone up in a lot of people's estimations these past days - firstly with the speech he gave and then how he has conducted himself in the run up to, and during the funeral.

A few take sways.. Permission was given to the US based on potential and credible threats against Biden due to his very high profile - that he and the first lady travel with their own security as always.

Biden & Jill were traveling with their own protection (Secret Service) and if you noticed yeasterday. . they were not only close to an exit (at the main entrance/exit) but seated on an aisle. Should anything have gone awry for him or any other attendee.. they were positioned to be taken out of the Abbey in a hurry.
Their seating assignment was done with all the security forces who had a stake in the safekeeping of the global dignitaries in attendance yesterday.

Nothing yesterday was left to chance.. I can’t even begin to think of the logistical nightmare that the service at the Abbey presented. But all things said - it appears to have gone off without a hitch.

Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. The Order recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country.”

Sandra Oh was part of a delegation of Order of Canada recipients; I’m not sure what criteria was used to choose them. The Bohemian Rhapsody thing hardly approaches scandal-level (and we should know), just one more cringy incident we could have done without. I hope it evaporates very quickly so we can go back to feeling pride at the dignity the Mounties represented us with.

The Sandra Oh inclusion still baffles me. She received her Order of Canada in June of this year for her contribution to the Arts. Not sure that her contribution in that field has been the stuff that the Order was designed for. Just my own opinion.

It was nice to see Mark Tewksbury in the delegation, makes sense with his multi Olympic history and ongoing contributions to Sport Canada. He also has a strong background in local community and national community service… which is another of the criteria for selection.

It was originally moved to June by King George VII as his birthday was November and he wanted people to celebrate in better weather, so I can't see it being moved to another month

In the Netherlands, our queen from 1948 to 1980 her birthday is on 30 April. So that was our national holiday Queen's Day. The next queen, 1980-2013, her birthday was in January. The Netherlands has very unpleasant weather that time of year. So in honour of her mother and because it made sense weatherwise and because it overlaps school breaks, it stayed 3 more decades on 30 April.

Then we got a King whose birthday is on 27 April. So he moved it to his own birthday and called it King's Day.
We, Dutch people, didnt mind. Tourists... that is another story. Even till this year we have tourists coming in on 30 April in Amsterdam, because they have a decade old travel guide, and then we have to tell them: you are kinda 3 days late.

I really want to know what Miss Manner's would have to say about this particular conundrum.

I would hope she would point out that the US is neither part of the UK or the Commonwealth. The vast majority of seats were reserved for folks from those two groups.
The service tomorrow in the US seems a lovely tribute to a life well lived.

We have a long weekend in May called Victoria Day to celebrate the monarch’s birthday.
They don’t change the name or the date to coincide with a new monarch’s birthday.
Originally named after Queen Victoria.
