Hi all,

We have just booked a trip to quebec city this summer (staying at the chateau laurier)

Can anyone suggest any activities or restaurants that shouldn't be missed? We have never been before so any tips/suggestions would be great!

Thanks

We are back from a weekend trip to Quebec city.
QC is beautiful, we loved our trip. We did a lot of walking and it always seemed to be uphill…

First off, right in front of Chateau Frontenac is an archeological dig site that you can tour. It is the foundations for the first chateaux that were built on the site. It is free and is done by parks Canada. For some reason it was not open on Friday or Saturday of last week but was open on Monday.

Right next to the dig site is a tour office and I would check that out first. They have many (many many) tours available for varying lengths of time. Our group decided not to do a tour so I can’t comment on them but the price seemed good and the tours covered a lot of ground ( according to the brochure at least).

If you are looking for a shopping mall, there is a shuttle bus that will take you from your hotel to the 3 malls that are connected together ( I think they are called place laurier) Lots of stores that are only in Quebec so it isn’t your regular mall experience although the usual suspects are also present. If you are looking for kids clothes I found a store called Souris Mini in the mall that puts gymboree to shame. There is also a quebec kids clothes label called Deux par deux that has really cute clothes but I was not able ( read: DH wouldn’t wait around) for me to find a store that carried that label exclusively. The malls are near the universite de laval. Another store is called Simons and it has really cool men’ and women’s clothes at a good price point. Simons is in old quebec as well as at the big mall.

Some streets are closed in the evening on the weekends so that the restaurants can increase the sizes of their patios. We just walked around in the afternoon and looked at all the dinner menus that are posted. Once we decided where we liked we made a reservation for the evening. One place that we all really liked was aux anciens canadiens. Delicious and hearty food. DH ordered the Table d’hote ( 4or 5 course meal) and I ordered my main course ( plat principale) a la carte. We had lots of food.

We also toured the citadel and it is an active military base so you have to take a tour to see inside. We chose the governor generals house tour ( I thought it was going to be a tour of an old house) Wrong tour. We were only allowed to see the newly built public rooms (yawn, you’ve seen one hotel ball room you’ve seen ‘em all)

We walked through the plains of Abraham and to the musee des beaux arts. Right now there is an exhibit from the Louvre. It was good and we all enjoyed it.

We walked from the plains through Parc Jeanne d’Arc which is a beautiful flower garden with gorgeous Victorian house along side of it.

We also did a horse carriage ride which was $80 and I thought it wasn’t worth it as we had walked on all the streets the carriage took us on and the driver ( although charming and funny) was not able to give us any further info on the places we were seeing.

Les Miserables is going to be playing there shortly at a theatre just outside the old wall. It looks like a beautifull old theatre with cafes spilling out all around it.

I could go on and on and on ( I think I have) We spent 2 full days touring upper town and 1 day touring lower town and we could have spent another day on lower town but we went to Montreal for the Formula one race instead.

Thanks so much for all of the tips! I'm glad you had such a great time, I'm really looking forward to it!

We had poutine at Ashtons. It was very good in that cheesy, gravy-ish, greasy chip kinda way.
DH thought it was :worship:

We were in Quebec City during March break. If you have children and a car, be sure to check out this amazing waterpark "Valcartier Vacation Village" (valcartier.com). It was an amazing tubing park in the winter and looks like an awesome waterpark in the summer. It is about a 30 minute drive from Quebec City.

Downtown Quebec City was beautiful. The St. Lawrence river was blowing wicked winds in March so we could not really walk around but I am sure it is beautiful in the warmer months.

If you exit your hotel and walk down the street (away from the river), on the right hand side there is a restaurant that is in the oldest building in Quebec City (at least that is what an artist told us). It is white with red accents. It is supposed to have excellent Pea Soup - a French Canadian favourite.

that restaurant is aux anciens canadiens. It really is very good.

We also did the musee du civilisation. It is a huge museum. We spent 2.5 hours and really only saw 3 exhibits.

Musee des beaux arts has a caa discount on admission. so take your card if you have one.

I absolutely love Quebec city. I suggest the Musee du fort, it's right across from the chateau frontenac. I also recommend taking the tour of the citadel and walking across the plaines of Abraham. For a city that I love so much it breaks my heart to say this but I can't stand the food there. I did however find that the cochon dingue was pretty good.

My wife is Québecoise, so we head up north every summer to visit her family. And we ALWAYS stop for a day or two in Québec City, on our way up to Gaspésie and sometimes on the way back home.

If you want to visit something outside of the city, there are a few "natural" attractions that you might enjoy seeing. We visited them all in one day. There is the "Parc de la Chute Mormorency" in nearby Beauport: http://www.sepaq.com/ct/pcm/en/ It is free to walk around the park, but there is a small parking fee. You can park at the bottom of the falls and take the cable-car up to the top of the falls and back down. If not using the cable cars, there are stairways that you can use to get to the top. There are spectacular views of Québec City, the St. Lawrence River and L'Ile d'Orléans.

A little ways up the road on the way to our next destination, we stopped at a Honey Economuseum, Musée de L'Abeille". http://www.musee-abeille.com/en/default.html It is free to visit. It has an exhibit about the history of beekeeping and a large glass beehive that you can observe the bees at work. Try to find the Queen bee, she is marked with an "X". Before exiting, you will pass through a shop that sells pastries and candy made from honey and maple syrup. And you can taste some samples of different types of honey. We have young kids and they enjoyed it.

Finally, we set off to our final destination, Canyon Ste.-Anne: http://www.canyonste-anne.qc.ca/index.html This is a picturesque canyon that has trails, suspension bridges and many scenic overlooks.

Are there any VERY inexpensive hotels/motels around Quebec City? We don't need to stay right in city centre. Thanks! Sandra
