Is a quart like a freezer bag?

A quart is equivalent to a 1 litre zip lock bag.

Slightly smaller than a single bag of milk...they hold 1.33 litres each. (for a total of 4 l per "big bag")

Ziplock style or zippered is preferred...

While in Buffalo airport Sunday I heard the following announcement:

Remember when traveling with liquids the following: 3-1-1

3 ~ oz maximum size liquid container
1 ~ quart freezer bag
1 ~ per person

Although they say 3-1-1 it is actually 3.4oz (or 100mL) per liquid container.

And yes, a 1 litre ziploc bag is fine (quart sized bags aren't easy to come by in Canada). Many airports have baggies you can grab at tables just before you hit security, if you've forgotten to bring one.

I was wondering if my mascara, lipstick and lib balm are considered liquid?

Also, if there is a little contact lens solution in my case, does that go in there as well?

Man, I don't know why I don't get this....

It will be okay - I promise.

It is am many bottles as you can "fit comfortably" in the baggie. I've shoved a lot of bottles into my baggie and I've never heard the bottle complain, so I amuse that they are comfortable.

Mascara and lip balm in a tub (like the blistex type) go in the baggie. Lipstick and lib balm in the stick form do not. Basically - if it takes the shape of it's container, it goes in the bag (this includes things like peanut butter - not that you asked, but in case is applies).

Contact lens solution is considered a medical need and does not go in the back or need to be 100mL or less. You do, however, need to show it to the agent before your carry-on goes through the machine. I just take out my baggie and any other "medical liquids" and show the agent and then stick them in a tray together. You may be instructed differently, but that is the basic idea.

The 1L bags are bigger than the standard sandwich bag. I think I buy them as "Freezer Bags" when I buy ziploc bags (but don't quote me on that).

We have always used the 'medium' sized Ziploc freezer bags. You can jam a lot of stuff in there. We always throw our contact lens cases in this bag with everything else, as well as a travel sized solution. Our larger bottle of solution goes in our checked suitcase, as does any other large bottles of toiletries we take for our trip. DW usually has most of her makeup, lens case, small toothpaste...We even carry small bottles of sunscreen in our carry on if we will be arriving midday. We apply sunscreen to the kids during our layover so we can hit the parks even faster!!

Like a PP has already mentioned...don't panic...fill your bag with items 100ml or less. At least you realize that you must do this. We've seen more people having to leave behind bottles of water, bottles of sunscreen, bottles of lotion...what a waste of money!! Wake up people...find out about regulations BEFORE you fly!
