Quarantined for head cold?

If you have a head cold (sneezing, stuffy nose, and coughing - no fever), would they quarantine you to your stateroom the entire length of the cruise?

Hard to say. Probably not. Especially if you don't go to the doctor.

But, if I were feeling like that, I wouldn't want to be exposing everyone else onboard.

I was on the receiving end of a tablemates "it's just a cold" 3 days before the end of one of our cruises, and came down with the grandaddy of all colds by the time I got home. I mean, really, the man had been a teacher, didn't he have the common sense to "stay home" when sick, instead of exposing others? Obviously not.

My DD (age 7) just started showing signs of a head cold tonight. We are flying out tomorrow morning for Orlando. We are spending 1 day at Magic Kingdom (Thursday) and then we are getting on 3 Night cruise on Friday. I've been planning this vacation for 10 months. My DD has been looking forward to this trip and keeps telling me that it's just a cough and she feels fine but I can see it in her face that she is getting a head cold.

Oh, and this vacation is to celebrate her birthday.

This happened to me when we were about to travel as well (non Disney) one time and I took my son into urgent care and asked for a steroid shot because we were traveling. They didn't mind doing it at all. Worked like a charm! And I've done it for my other son once since as well. (Please no judgment - we all parent differently and one steroid shot is not going to kill them.)

I don't have time for that. We leave for airport tomorrow at 7am

No, you should be fine. I wouldn't report anything on the health form. Enjoy your cruise.

MUN
FYI, when you go to check in you will be handed a form similar to this. It asks a few health questions. The particular one you would be concerned with is the one about having a fever AND a cough, etc. As long as no fever, you're good.

That is great news!! Thank you so much!!

Just an FYI, the flu that is going around is the flu that mimics a sinus infection. I had it, and I toughed it out via NyQuil and DayQuil... DGF got it from me, we went to the doctor and they flu tested her and it came back positive for flu...

Just throwing that out there.

You take a chance by purposely denying an illness ... most especially on a cruise. They often have basic items/care ...but to those that would need "real" care.. not a risk I'd take.
Clearly not talking a cold here.
That being said... costly vacations we get travel insurance.
Safe healthy travels One/all.

Texasgingerbread.. they did a steroid shot for what, just curious, a cold??

Years back my sis was traveling, on Christmas Eve day...back to the states... thru Japan...
they wouldn't let her thru :(.
She was shocked but she did have a Headcold, ( don't recall a temp tho) so she had to hole up for more than 24 hours n spent Xmas day in a hotel instead. Stuff happens..

DD is just coughing and stuffy nose. It is definitely not anything more serious. No fever and no vomiting. I called DCL and they said she would only be quarantined if she got really sick on the ship and they thought she was contagious. I just want DD to feel better so she can enjoy this vacation. She has been so excited and counting down the days.

Colds are contagious, but your not going to be quarantined. Half the people I worked with today had a cold. I just got over one. I'm sure I passed it on. Tis the season for colds. Take some cold medicine with you and enjoy your cruise.

Are there cold meds that you use for her? Make sure you have some in your bag. Maybe give her some antihistamines (for kids) for her plane ride. She doesn't need ear pain, if she's stuffed up.

I second the recommendation to go to the pharmacy and stock up on childrens cough and cold meds as well as tylenol and motrin for body aches. You'll have more options at a better price.

All they ask about (in terms of this sort of illness) is if there's a fever involved.

I mean, really, the man had been a teacher, didn't he have the common sense to "stay home" when sick, instead of exposing others?

Teachers are exposed to colds 24/7. Kids who go to school seem to go to school no matter what, and it's the same with teachers. At least around here. And they go to the Y, too. I don't even know HOW. I finally, after MONTHS of being around "oh it's a cold" people, got it, and today was day...5? And I finally felt OK enough to go back to my pilates class. Even yesterday the thought of going to yoga just exhausted me. But then I don't dayquil or stuff like that.

Anyway, just saying that me staying home for 4 full days is rare enough (given the symptoms in my fellow yoga/pilates classmates over the last few months), let alone staying home until it's done.

Just an FYI, the flu that is going around is the flu that mimics a sinus infection.

Now THAT is interesting. And helps to explain MIL getting pneumonia very soon after getting antibiotics for a "do you have a headache? oh it's a sinus infection then". She hadn't eaten for over a day, OF COURSE she had a headache. And she was sick in one way or another for a month. Started the DAY after her flu shot (just like everyone else's it seems), but even though (even if you believe the shot works) there was absolutely NO time for her to mount an immune response to it, and it totally could have been the flu, she wasn't tested for it and they gave it no amount of thought whatsoever. Her symptoms looked exactly like influenza, she was utterly miserable, but nope, sinus infection, and no doubt bacterial, so here's the antibiotics bye. And here we are, with pneumonia and still sick and an ER visit and hospital stay. (she's 79 with uncontrolled diabetes b/c she lives alone by choice and is slowly going into vascular dementia and doesn't understand "carbohydrate" and insulin is desperately unsafe for her, so she just gets to deal with normal 190 readings while taking glipizide and metformin...after not eating for a day her ER blood sugar reading was 250, wheeeeee...I tell you, 7/8 of the reason she started to rally while at the hospital was their insulin and proper food...)

You take a chance by purposely denying an illness ...

There's nowhere on the form to put "head cold". Unless you also have a fever.

Yeah, it was the weirdest thing. When I think of the flu, I think of being doubled over on the toilet with a bucket in hand. We kept trying to say it was a sinus infection because, to me, that what it was. A bad sinus thing that would just pass. The doctor kept pushing and they took a swab from my girlfriends nose and within 10 minutes the results said she had the flu. She even though she was developing pneumonia, but when the doctor listened to her lungs, he said they were clear. So yeah, this flu IS contagious and it so closely mimics a sinus infection that if you treat it like sinuses, you won't touch it.

So a word to those traveling: Hit the Vitamin C hard, get travel masks (like the operating room masks) or something to minimize your chance of getting this.

So-called "stomach flu" isn't "the flu" at all -- it has no relationship to influenza. Worshiping-the-porcelain-statue-sickness is usually caused by food poisoning or one of a myriad of other gastro-intestinal "bugs" that can spread between people (think norovirus, among others).

Influenza is a respiratory illness: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/index.htm

I refer to my classroom as my Petrie dish. I have had all 6 of my kids hacking, sneezing, snotting, etc. all over the place because they get sent in anyway - usually because there is no one to take care of them because their mom (single mom in 4 out of 6 kids in my class - it has been as high as 6 out of 6) has to work or risk losing her job(s). And given their cognitive level, the majority of them simply cannot remember to cover mouth/nose/etc. I've learned to turn my head away when helping to zip coats, etc. but the germs are I'm the air.

And yes, unless we have a fever that sends us to the doctor so we have proof that we were sick, most teachers I know do keep pushing through. Most principals I know of will demand a doctor's note for more than 2 "self-treat" sick days in a row, and most doctors won't even see someone for "just a cold" so we don't really have a choice - unless one day only will help.

It stinks, but that is the reality in my school and classroom. I feel like I should own stock in AirBorne or Emergen-C and I STILL get stuff.

From the CDC:
Influenza Symptoms
Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

Realized you already left. Hope you have a good flight! Right before my most recent cruise, I was feeling the same way. Orlando does really make people feel better. If you have OTC Medicine that makes her feel better bring it along. There are tissues in all staterooms and unlike some resorts at WDW it's not a hike back to your room, so if she needs a rest in the middle of the day she can. Oh, and get a good night sleep.
