QUARANTINE AND THEN FLYING HOME

Once you test positive and then you quarantine for 10 days do you have to re-test and get a negative result before you fly home or do you just show your positive test and hotel receipt to board the plane and not have to re-test?

No. You just need to show your molecular (Aka PCR) test from at least 10 days ago.

Just a thought, now that you can do a rapid test, I think you could try for a negative rapid even earlier then the 10 days and if you are testing negative then you can go home? After the 5 days of course so that you would not be travelling while you could potentially spread and assuming you have no symptoms or improving symptoms.

That's if you do a molecular. With a RAT you will need to test again and show negative to get on a plane or cross the border without fear of fines. Another positive on a RAT for you or someone in your party means the clock starts again.

Just another reason we're sticking to molecular tests.

I assume this would work. You need a negative test to return to Canada taken within the designated windows. If you test + on a Monday, but then neg on a Tuesday, you could use the neg to travel.

No requirement for a hotel receipt.
There's a few different thoughts here....
If you test positive in the US, you are to quarantine for 5 days (as per the CDC), but your travelling party is not required to if vaccinated.
You can enter Canada 10 days after a positive PCR test. You can enter Canada with a negative PCR/Antigen test.
It is unclear if you test positive on a PCR and then negative on an Antigen the next day, if you can use the Antigen to travel. The Canadian Government site says "You will not be able to board a public flight to come to Canada unless you present a valid pre-entry test result or a medical certificate confirming that your symptoms are not related to COVID-19." which would mean yes, but you may also fall under the CDC no travel guidance.

Per CDC you cannot board a plane for 10 days either after a positive result. So both Canada and US align in this respect.

Depends on the test. If its molecular, then yes, you can use that positive result to return to Canada 10 days after it was taken - and bonus - that test remains good for an additional 170 days, allowing you to return without another test. If its antigen - you need a negative.

But keep in mind - you cannot be denied entry at a land crossing if you are a legal resident of Canada, even with a positive COVID test. You face the possibility of huge fines, that is true, but you will be let in. And, for what it's worth, there are many reports out there that if you have a reasonable and clear quarantine plan presented to the border officials you will not be fined.

Honestly, if I tested positive on a RAT, I'd immediately try to find a NAAT for the same day so that the clock starts ticking right away on the 10 days.... Otherwise you could end up with another positive on a RAT on day 5, 6, 7 or however many days out and the clock would just keep resetting, right? Or am I reading this wrong? The last set of changes did absolutely nothing but aggravate already stressful criteria for US-Can travel.

@Madame You are right. If positive on RAT immediately get a Molecular test as 10 days start from that test date. I was still testing positive on RAT 9 days after molecular test, so that is not a relatable thing to try.

That’s what I figured, but good to have confirmation. This is my plan for my July solo trip if I test positive on on a RAT - I think I’ll buy a Switch RAT but book a NAAT for that same day just in case.

I suggest doing RATs several times during your vacation just in case you test positive early on and need to get that PCR.

Oooh this is smart. We have two boxes of tests maybe should go to the library and stock up on more. We already had Covid in Jan but I’m still stressed about testing positive! Lol

Yes, the RATs we brought with us is how we found out one of our party was positive a day before we went for the return home test. She was having symptoms so took the test. I tested negative on RAT that day, positive on NAAT the next afternoon, and super faint positive on RAT the evening after I got the positive NAAT test (I was fully positive on RAT the day after the NAAT test…)
