My phone still says "excessive heat warning," too. 102 this weekend. I do feel so badly for you, Meriweather. I know it is even hotter there and has been forever!

I Googled Christmas Train in LA. It looks there will be a new Christmas train starting this year (well maybe not this year but that's what is says). Perhaps on one of our Meets we will have to also check that out :)

Have a good Wednesday everyone!

Meriweather - I'm not very familiar with the winter months out west (Arizona?), what kind of normal wintertime temps do you guys get out there? Does it get considerably cooler, or is it just a cooler version of warm?

Yes, Arizona. Winter normal is mid 60's, nights, low 40s, but we have been down in the mid 20's.

Yep....112 expected Saturday.....but that is Mulan watching day for the family, so we won't need to go out.
I think we have been a lot of records with excessive heat days.
Summer is hot enough here without that!

Back from dermotologist appointment and waiting for the kids for baking day

We drove to WDW once and stopped at South of the Border at 0430. :scared1:

Dang! You must be one brave person :P
Last time we drove down past there I made my husband go two more exits south before we stopped for the night! South of the Border skives me out!

Haha lol we had no idea! We just wanted coffee! :lmao:

If anyone gets to San Diego I highly recommend touring the Midway. It was so awe inspiring. My Dad and DFIL were both in WWII so I am probably biased towards seeing anything related to WWII. My older DS and DDIL were impressed too. We took our kids to Edaville at Christmas a few times and they loved it. One year it was so cold I had my younger DS snuggled under my coat in a carrier. He was 2 at the time.

Those pumpkin Spice snaps may need to find their way into my shopping cart. DH would love those. When we go to North Conway he always gets a pumpkin pie blizzard at Dairy Queen. I look forward to the fall pictures every day.

We drove to WDW once and only waved to South of the Border as we drove by. It sounds like an interesting place. LOL!

It is rainy here today so no doggie walk or regular walk. I don't feel like cooking tonight so it may be wraps from a local place down the street. Last night was leftover pasta fagioli soup. So good.

I gotta get to San Diego - I understand it's a great place to visit. I have a meeting I need to attend every year in early March, and the year before I started going it was in San Diego. This year it was Orlando, next year it's Vegas. I keep hoping they go back to San Diego!

Just got an email from Dairy Queen--fall flavors. Caramel Apple Pie Blizzard, and Pumpkin Butter Cookie Shake (they also have the Pumpkin Pie Blizzard)--

Rained most of the day here, sun just now came out. I didn't feel great (bad headache), so did a whole lot of nothing. I had 5 episodes of Love Island on the tivo, so I binge watched those. Not usually my kind of show, but wanted something I could mindlessly watch, lol
We have to go to his office tonite to drop something off, so thinking dinner will either be Chic A Filet, or Domino's Pizza, I just don't feel good enough to cook.
Have a great afternoon everyone

We don't have Dairy Queen out here, Lynxstch, otherwise that would be fun to go there. I have only been to DQ and also Foster's Freeze on road trips. Feel better!

It's now supposed to be 105 this weekend, yuck. Still nothing like AZ. I hope you have fun baking with your grandkids and watching Mulan, Meriweather.

I would enjoy revisiting a lot of the San Diego museums meant to say that earlier. Not sure the very long (for me) drive would work unless there was a faster train way which I think there is. One day will have to look into that :)

Feel better

Our recent trips to San Diego have been with the little ones for the zoo.
But someday......my father was also in WWII. At Pearl Harbor

I first read that as "Peanut Butter Cookie Shake" and was half way out the door to the DQ! Sadly I'm not much of a pumpkin fan - unless we are talking pumpkin roll - but peanut butter cookies are hard for me to walk away from haha!

I have a dump question about DQ - do they only have vanilla soft serve, or do they also have chocolate soft serve?

Hope you feel better lynxstch - headaches can be downright exhaustive and really wring you out.

I'm hoping the rest of this week goes by fast, today certainly hasn't. I have a 3 hour online meeting tomorrow :crazy2: and Friday I have to drive down towards the beach again, in shore traffic. Yikes.

Good news today is that our state moved into Stage 3 or whatever they call it - so we are opening up a bit more. I'll take that as good news!
Dinner this evening will be pork chops, probably grilled, most likely over salad or spanish rice.

They have chocolate and I believe twist. I don't like vanilla anything, I always have my blizzards made with chocolate. The chocolate covered cherry one in chocolate is my favorite. Not a fan of pumpkin anything!

Thank you,,that's how I feel, like I went through the wringer. Glad all my chores were done yesterday!

Hubby is going on hour 3 of a managers phone meeting right now. All I can hear is everyone trying to yell over everyone else, lol!

Same here,,as of 5:00 Friday nite. Movie theaters can reopen, stores can increase capacity, etc. Hoping this doesn't all lead to more and more positive cases.

What is South of the Border? Maybe someone said previously and I missed it.

DH and I went to San Diego last October. We had a really nice time.

I know what you mean about not going to church yet. I'm just not ready to be around a lot of people. They had a morning service outside at 8 am two weeks ago. I heard close to 300 people attended. While most socially distanced during the service, I saw a picture and most weren't afterward.

Carol is cooking Crunchwraps for us this evening.

Yikes! Look at the time! Gotta go get Lil Joe and take him to his counseling session.

What is South of the Border?

https://www.sobpedro.com/
It's a classy little joint on 95 in South Carolina. And by classy, I mean Klassy. The website appears to be a bit fancy for the reality of the place! Those of us on the east coast who have driven from points north to Florida - or other locations in the south - will know of it if for no other reason than the fact that they have billboards up on 95 S, and I'm guessing 95 N, announcing how far away you are and how many miles till you get there, and the billboards seem to start 100's of miles before you actually get to South Carolina! It feels like you are driving for hours and hours as you pass these billboards that seem to be about every mile or so! I think in the 60's & 70's & 80's it was a pretty big deal and a destination for folks on their way South. Now it's a sketchy, sprawling bit of Americana that has seen better days. But I'll tell you what, you go by there at night and you won't be able to miss the place - they've got it lit up like nothing else!

Chocolate and Vanilla soft serve twist sounds so good! 🍨 What's funny is for years I would think what was the point to any dessert treat when chocolate was not involved? Now, I tend to prefer Vanilla because it often is lighter and sweeter than chocolate. My favorite local frozen yogurt place that I am sadly not sure will survive this plague has the best vanilla. I do get hot fudge on top.

Good news your state is moving into better territory, Easyas123! Sorry about that super long online meeting you have, yuck! I hope it will be interesting! Also that maybe there will be at least one break!

Kirby, wow to 300 even outdoors for church! I just can't imagine that but then again I do live in LA. I would not feel comfortable with that either. I do think once it does get much cooler maybe next year a ton smaller outdoor service might be the safest first attempt at having one. I would not attend though just my afternoon thoughts :)

Hi to all, and happy Wednesday from me too!

We go to church on line, even though our service does have some people inside. I am in NJ, and as of FrI day indoor dining will be allowed at 25% capacity. I don’t feel ready to do that either.

DH began working for the census last week. He had been hired a month or two ago, but once he realized he would be required to go into nursing homes, he quit. He kept getting calls to see if he was interested and he would tell his story, about how he had been sworn in, and during training, he found out just what they wanted him to do. All along he would mention his age, and he has been assured he would not have to go. Finally, someone took what he said to heart, and he has a clerical job in an office in which he does feel safe. He is happy to have this to do, usually we travel.

Gus, our dog misses him, and right now is outside waiting by the gate. This only lasts through October. We do have plans to meet friends in TN in November, so we have that to look forward to.

Today a friend lost his wallet, so we are hoping a kind person will see a sign we’ve hung up and return It. We are hopeful.

Meriweather, I wonder goodies you will be baking with your Grands today!

My thankfulness today is for the friends who stay in touch.

DGD made lemon bars but they were still in the oven when she left so will get pictures Saturday when we take them over for our Mulan party

Hi back, Bobbiwoz, good to see you on here again :) I had a good friend who was hired by the Census. She ended up not taking the job for the same concerns as your husband! She did not feel safe right now going door to door! Too bad there was no virtual way to be employed for this. I am glad your husband did find work otherwise. What kind of dog is:dog2: Gus? ETA: Prayers your friend's wallet is found safely and in tact! I did send you a PM.

Meriweather, your pictures of your grand children always make me smile, thank you for sharing with us.

I snapped that pic in the store, but I did buy a bag and just opened them tonight. Official review: I love them!!

Chocolate and Vanilla soft serve twist sounds so good! 🍨

I'm not a big vanilla person, buy one place around here does a coffee/chocolate twist, and it's heavenly!

Today a friend lost his wallet, so we are hoping a kind person will see a sign we’ve hung up and return It. We are hopeful.

DS has lost his twice, and both times it was returned intact! The first was when he was just a kid, so not much in it. But there was some sentimental stuff - like his monorail license from WDW. It fell out of his pocket in a restaurant booth on vacation, and a kind-hearted stranger mailed it back to him. 😃

The second time was last year at college, when he lost it on a bus. He realized it very quickly, called the bus company, and they looked but didn't find it - so he was sure it had been taken. We canceled the cards and everything. But a couple weeks later, they must have been doing deep cleaning or repairs or something and found it wedged in between the seat and wall. They gave it to campus security, who called us, and he picked it up. Everything (including a decent amount of cash) was still in it. 😃

I thought of a related to the last QOTD, QOTD for today! QOTD for Tuesday, September 1st: What was a fun smaller (so not WDW or DL) touristy place you have visited?

I've been thinking about this since yesterday and I still can't decide what would be "touristy" that I've actually visited! "Touristy" to me means "kitschy" or off-the-beaten path. That said...

We LOVED Legoland! Can't wait for the one in New York to open - only 2.5 hours from our house!
Dinosaur World in Plant City, Florida (now THAT'S "touristy" ;) )
ZooTampa at Lowry Park
Clearwater Marine Aquarium
John's Pass, Madeira Beach

Out in the midwest...
Brookfield Zoo
Went up to the top of the Sears Tower (I will ALWAYS call it the Sears Tower!)
The Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier
I used to go to the Museum of Science and Industry every summer when I visited my father
Other various Chicago museums (Field, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium)
Millennium Park
The House on the Rock in Wisconsin
Mall of America in Minnesota

Closer to home...
Old Sturbridge Village
Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport
Went on the CT River Ferry and visited Gillette Castle
PEZ Visitor Center
Salem, MA...notable memory from the last visit, Shaquille O'Neal was in our tour group at the New England Pirate Museum. I was standing right next to him and didn't even notice! (Yes, my middle name is "Oblivious"... ;) )
New London CT Lighthouse Cruise
My cousin and I had dinner at Cheers in Boston
Before we had Six Flags New England, the local amusement park was Riverside Park and it was a thousand times better than Six Flags! I miss it SO much!

Hampton Beach, Polar Caves, and North Conway, NH.
Gettysburg and Hershey, PA. I remember the Chocolate World ride.

We've been to Las Vegas and didn't gamble. On our honeymoon. We enjoyed Madame Tussaud's and the gondola ride at the Venetian, the Tournament of Kings dinner show at the Excalibur (where we stayed) (where you eat your food without utensils and cheer for your "champion"), toured the Titanic and Bodies exhibits at the Luxor, enjoyed the theming at Mandalay Bay and toured the Shark Reef Aquarium, toured the lion exhibit at the MGM Grand, and enjoyed a couple of fountain shows at the Bellagio.

There have been plenty of other places, but not sure if they'd be considered "touristy."

And of course, there's...
South of the Border was a must stop at tourist stop, and now that we've done it, we will never have to stop again. LOL The food at the fast food shop was bad.

We have driven to Florida 4 times. We stopped at South of the Border every year except in 2018. Josh even says now, "We can't pass up the giant sombrero." We usually just visit the big gift shop and move on. We like to stay at a particular hotel in Florence, 30 minutes down the road.
