Anyone knows what are the qualifications for the Nursery Staff? When I called and asked, DCL just read me some information about the trainings they go through.

I know things can happen anywhere but I'd like to think at the very least there are background checks and such. Maybe? .... Can you tell I am a bit nervous to leave my LO? I was hoping to enjoy some alone time with DH ...

I know exactly how you feel. :grouphug:

We have sailed on Disney Cruise a few times and I always am paranoid when it comes to stuff like this. Especially now since that news story came out about a molestation on board that happened last year. I always wonder if they run background checks on the counselors in the nursery, kids clubs, and on every other employee on board.

Since that story came out, I was wondering if there was a way that us concerned future cruisers can find out if background checks are done(would be nice if it wasn't scripted) or if there are any security measures in place to try and prevent something from happening. I do hope Disney has a shorter leash on its employees now that this story has surfaced. Im sure I am one of many concerned parents.

As far as finding out if there are security measures or background checks in place, I am aware that they can't go into detail, but it would be nice to have a piece of mind when my child wants to play in the club, or if my infant is in the nursery.

Hate to say it even if background checks done doesn't mean something can't happen. Someone may have never been caught or they didn't disclose where they got caught. Many counties in California you have to go to the courthouse to run that county. If they don't put it on the applicatiin its not ran. Not sure how its done for other countries. That being said counselors normally have early childhood/ education backgrounds and extensive training. Go with instinct and teach your children when its ok to refuse an adult.

I'm not really sure why there has been an immediately leap from the story in the news to the nursery staff. If you're concerned, talk with the staff during the open house. Ask them about their background and why they chose to work with children on a ship. Open the lines of communication from the beginning and then always continue to communicate with your child(ren) and caregiver(s).

Even as a Disney Store Cast Member, we are required to undergo a background check before being offered a position. I don't know what it entails as I'm a teacher and was fingerprinted and background checked for that, so they just got verification from the Dept of Ed about mine. But if we're merely store cast members who are working at most 8-hour shifts, I can't imagine they don't do background checks.

ETA: Actually I remember that my sister, who already worked for WDW but changed to the cruise line had to have a further check done before being hired on the ship, and she's a scheduler who has little direct contact with the guests. So yes, they DO undergo background checks.

But background checks are only as good as what appears on them regardless of where they are obtained. I don't know if allegations found to be unsupported or dismissed appear or if it's only any abuse conviction. But it's dependent on something having been reported either way. If nothing has ever been reported on someone, it's not going to show up on ANY kind of check.

This, and the clubs staff as well. And even then, club CMs are not allowed into the bathrooms with the kids (hence the 100% potty trained rule) and the nursery on the Wonder has a one-way mirror that we used all the time to check on our son; I bet the other nurseries do, too.

I am far more concerned about my kids on the ship outside of the clubs than in them.

Thank you so much for all of your input. I actually worried about this prior to the recent news coming up ... What worried me the most was the script I was given by the cast member when I called to inquire.

As my child gets older, of course our lines of communication will be open and emergency measures will be in place, however, he is not yet 2 years old and therefore, talking and communicating isn't going to do much at this point.

I called DCL again today and a more relaxed cast member than the one I talked to weeks ago explained that they do run background checks on them. As many of you say, a background check is just a check and it doesn't guarantee anything ... but at the very least I expected them to do that if they were going to have them work directly with children.

After much discussion with friends and family members I think more than anything I am worried about the fact that this is our fist cruise and I don't know what to expect. I don't know how the nursery is set up etc.

I love hearing about the one way mirror and the CMs ratios ... It truly makes me feel much more at ease. These are the things that I wished I knew. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks again! I appreciate you all taking the time to reply :)

I think it's great you are acknowledging and voicing your concerns. We have a young daughter who isn't able to communicate verbally any concerns. She was 16 mths on our cruise last month. However, her willingness to dive into the arms of multiple CMs showed to us she was a-okay. After our first visit, the CMs knew her name and favorite toys. She would run to the opposite end of the room when we came to pick her up. I was also really impressed with the structure of the program. Having a doctorate in education, I didn't think it was going to be anything more than play. I was completely wrong. Don't want to spoil it for you but wait for your special package the last night of your cruise. :-)

Thanks Swimfly, I love hearing great stories! Funny enough, I am a teacher so I am very much looking forward to the little surprise you mentioned! :) Thanks again for your input. I truly appreciate you taking the time.

Lots of the comments on the thread are putting me at much ease ...

We contacted Steiner, as well as a few cruise lines, to find out about their hiring practices. Here's what we learned:

Background checks are an essential part of the hiring process. "Carnival conducts background checks for all shipboard and shoreside personnel," Carnival spokesman Tim Gallagher tells us. "Background checks on all non-U.S. shipboard personnel are conducted by agencies in the candidates' home country and a certified criminal history document for the country of origin is required." Glenn Fusfield, chief operating officer of Steiner Leisure, says that every job applicant for an onboard position is required to supply a police record and background check with official seals -- the company can tell when the documents are faked.

"If there's record of a prior arrest or a conviction, we handle that on an individual basis," says Fusfield. "In some cases, the candidate would automatically be disqualified. But it might be that they have something lingering from their past that won't interfere with their current job, or the people have moved on." He maintains that Kaloyanov had a "clean and perfect" background check from his home country when Steiner hired him.

The cruise line or hiring company is not the only organization to run background checks. "The U.S. State Department oversees the issuance of seamen's visas to foreign nationals who sail with ships into U.S. ports," says Cynthia Martinez, spokeswoman for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara Club Cruises. "Therefore the U.S. embassy in the crewmember's country of origin conducts background checks in connection with the issuance of seamen's visas." In addition, U.S. Customs and Border Protection runs checks on ships' manifests, which include all crewmembers onboard, each time a ship enters and leaves U.S. ports. Other countries have similar practices. So even if the hiring agency misses a red flag, the government is looking out for wanted persons entering the country on cruise ships.

And what if a crewmember has a clean record, but gets in trouble after being hired? Says Martinez, "Any crew dismissed from employment for Royal Caribbean for violation of our zero-tolerance policies is not eligible for re-hire with our company."

Dear musicians,

Background checks are one of the items on your list of paperwork to be completed before you embark on a ship.

What seemed to be a sporadic procedure is now pretty much a standard amongst all major cruise lines. For some that means having to sign a consent form, giving authorization to a third party company that specializes in background checks. For others it means getting a police record at your local police station. We will be able to tell you more exactly what to do, once we know which cruise line you’ll be working for.

Not sure if it helps, but my DD was 1.5 when she first sailed on the Dream and she actually LOVED the nursery. She cries daily when I drop her off at daycare so for her to go willingly and not cry was HUGE! Even when she did cry on the first day, the CMs were amazing with her! We watched through the mirror and they held her and did all the things we recommended to help her get acclimated and then some!

I did get the chance to talk to some of the staff members and was surprised at how many were parents themselves. One woman who took particular interest in my DD was from Barbados and worked at a daycare prior to joining Disney but found she could make more money on the ship so that's what she did. Her DD was about the same age as mine so I think that may have been why there was a special connection.

They were all truly amazing and I would not hesitate to put a child in the nursery now. Of course, the next time we need the nursery will be with grandkids so that's going to be a while now!! LOL!

We've used the nursery twice in the past year. Once on the Dream, once on the Magic.

In both nurseries, most of the crew members were young women from The United Kingdom. I think most of them were in the college program. They all seemed very knowledgeable about babies/toddlers, and my daughter had fun.
