Qld August Dismeet 24/8- who's up for it?

Just a note-dearth of places near Ikea. One with promise (in a BMW showroom-bit different and UK chefs ex Harrods-bit pricey though)-is only open Mon-Fridays. Of course there always is the good old Ikea food hall...

Any Brisbanites who know the southside please jump in with suggestions.

Are fly-inners here mostly for the day? Southbank has some lovely spots - or Portside (to be near the airport), perhaps for an 'excursion' to Ikea after for those who don't mind driving/sharing a lift? Once we narrow down an area then we can look at venues :D

Maybe somewhere in the city? The Sydney-siders are flying in and out the same day but I am not sure of their return flight time. I'm overnighting at a hotel (and haven't told my family in Brisbane I'll be in town ;) )

Good idea, Franrose :) I'll be up for an excursion as long as I'm not in charge of the roll/head check and organising toilet stops ;) But I do have a nifty whistle on a lanyard for keeping the unruly AussieKaren in check ;)

:rotfl:

I'm going to vote Southbank then: close to the city and and airport, lots of lovely eating spots, things to see and a wheel of doom for AussieKaren.

OK Southbank it is-easy to get to, lots to do including the markets :) and yes, a baby wheel of doom. Franrose did you have some specific places in mind? I haven't eaten at Southbank for ages as there are so many good places closer to us in the burbs but I know there are lots of new ones opened at Southbank post floods so my experience is way out of date.

For anyone driving FYI its around $24 for parking for 3+ hours but there are tons of carpark spaces which being a Saturday rather than Sunday should be vacant and no major event on that I know of. (Sorry- organiser hat on). Also train stations and express bus routes.

Also who wanted to visit Ikea? Its about a 30-40 min trip south depending on traffic and ditto direct back to the airport..and their 'aint no easy pitstops on the freeway so (in my best mama's voice) "go before we leave" or BYO bucket ;)

If anyone needs a meet and greet/chauffeur for the day PM me-the airport now has a neat 30 min wait zone so arrivals can ring and you come and fetch-better than the old routine of parking at the southern cross memorial. You probably have had this forever in Sydney but in Brisbane it used to be pay exorbitant fees or illegally lurk.

There is the Airtrain into the city stations -think it cost us $16 each the other night only our local line had track works resulting in us then having to wait 45 mins for a bus from the transferring station and then of course the stops :furious: not happy Jan after a long flight late at night in the cold! but the Airtrain bit was good!

South bank sounds great they have a Max Brenner and a Churro place. We always eat at the Italian place by the water and markets. Have amici in my head but could be wrong.

Sydney-siders, what time to you have to be back at the airport? Anyone else have time constraints?

I've never been to Max Brenner so I'm happy to go there but we will also need to feed me with something more healthy beforehand. Maybe MB as a dessert/coffee location?

If we narrow down a few particular places and time frame then we can determine the finals privately through PM.

Max's is YUM! Chocolate con churros is the one of two others that have opened-friends haven't been very impressed with it and say Max's is better. The other is another chocolatarie. I agree savoury first-will PM a short list in the next week if people like. I quite like AWIDY suggestion (if I am thinking of the right place which I haven't been to) and I love eating at new places.

Think I know which one you mean - on the end, looks over the river, begins with A definitely lol - we ate there a couple of weeks ago :)

There are lots of ways we could go in that area! :D

It's changed so much since I left in '93 I feel like a tourist half of the time :( I know Kaspalli's though :) We had our wedding reception there when it was Scirocco :)

I do know that Italian you speak of at Southbank - it's lovely and not too expensive, if I remember correctly! It all seems to be coming together well.
Looking forward to seeing everyone. :thumbsup2
