We will be going for our very first WDW trip June 11th-17th and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I am a "planner" and feel more comfortable with a plan...BUT since there is just so much to do and account for in the parks I'm having a hard time. I've read 2 books and tons of online info, also subscribled to TGMike so maybe I'm on overload! :~) Anyway, I've got which park which days planned and most of our meals planned too (MYW Plan) but for those who do make an itinerary do you plan like what to do 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. in the parks or do you play it by crowds / family wants that day? Since it will be our first trip, me, dh, ds4 & dd2.5 we want to enjoy the "magic" but I know my kids will want to do stuff too...how do I balance it all out???

I'd appreciate any and all replies. Thanks again!

Dawn,

Take it easy with the planning hun. It shoulds like you have the perfect framework in place already for a wonderful trip. A few PS for meals, knowing which park on which days. I would let the rest fall into place each day. The parks can flow differently and if you decide that you HAVE to do things in a certain order, you will probably end up missing out on a lot and find yourself frustrated that you aren't "keeping on schedule".

I have never tried TG Mike, but I hear it is excellent. Go with what you already have and know that you will have a wonderful time. Knowing where we are going each day seems to be enough planning for my family to be comfortable and we see so much when we can look at a line and say "skip it" and come back later.

Good luck!

Another Planner here... Go forth and Plan, Plan, Plan! It will pass the time. :grouphug:

IMHO, step one is gaining an understanding on how to beat the crowds (think 'early'). You'll feel far less rushed if by early afternoon you've done 5-10 items on your checklist and not just 2 or 3. At that point, you can follow the plan, or not.

Another vote for planning. I read lots of guides, and this site obsessively. I do plan daily ride itineraries, sometimes we follow them to a 'T', sometimes we toss them. If you're working with ps arrangements you'll probably want to make sure that you do nearby attractions then. The most important planning for us has to do this our first coulple of hours each day. I'm really a commando about being in line before opening, and walking on to the toughest attractions as they open. My daughter was chosen to 'open' fantasyland one morning which was a very special memory. When my children were younger our first couple of hours at MK were highly critical. My plan is Dumbo first, fast pass Pooh, do Peter Pan then all other Fantasyland attractions asap. Get out of there by 10 and there will be no waiting. We rarely shop until after lunch when lines are longer, and usually take a long afternoon break (especially when they still napped). These days our break is usually for the pool, but hubby and I take turns on who goes and who naps, we still look really forward to that, even if it's lost on everyone else!

thanks for the great replies....I know that Dumbo will be a must since my kids are so young, and I will try to get us there eary to enjoy that! :~)

I block out spaces for the park that we want to be in for the amount of time we plan to be there. Then I will add things like Spectromagic, PS, other special events. I have a basic plan of where I want to be each day and for the period of time that I want to be there. I use Excel and make each park a different color. So I have a nice color coded sheet with each day as a column.

My family plans what parks we'll be at on what days and we also make a few PS. But that's about all the planning we do. We don't like to schedule what attractions we'll see because then we'd feel rushed to do it all in a specific time frame, and we also don't know how the crowds are going to be. We just like taking our time and doing whatever we feel like doing at the moment.

I followed TGM's Best Days recommendations religiously as well as his suggestions for touring AK and MK, particularly the first few hours. Other than those things, I was willing to be flexible and "smell the roses," but I wanted my family to be able to experience various rides and attractions with a minimum of hassle and wait. It worked perfectly. We planned very carefully for things like Dumbo, Space Mtn., Indy Speedway, and Splash Mtn. and got to ride them several times. Other things we just filled in as we found the time and desire.

We use the suggest touring plan found in The PassPorter and it has always been easy to move throughout the park and ride everything with minimal waits.

I found it very confusing trying to work out which days are best for each park. TGM and UG both give seemingly good but conflicting advice.

In the end I used these simple rules:

Never do a Disney park on the same day as it EMH

Dont do MK on Saturday or Monday (Saturday is always busy and Monday is busy as most people do MK first after arriving in Orlando at at the weekend)

Do Water Parks Monday or Tuedays (Most other people will start the week at a theme park then do a water park later in the week to rest. Also avoids local who go at weekends)

I then basically worked a schedule which conformed to these rules but allowed days at slower parks (AK, TL, BB) to come between busier days (MK,MGM,US,IOA)

Number 1 rule: Arrive 30-40 minutes early before park opening at every park. As well as being able to do the headliners without lines, it means your family will be hungry earlier allowing you to lunch at around 11-11:30 at any restaurant without needing a PS.

I was starting to feel the same way you are (and we'll be there the week before you too). I think you're off to a great start with TGM -- use him! I overwhelmed myself with all the books and message boards, but now that it's coming down to the wire I decided just to focus on TGM only and it's really helped calm me down. So, maybe if you choose just one of your resources and ignore the rest for a while that'll help.

Another vote here for plan, plan, plan. Reason is it is very easy to get distracted and at the end of the day realize you didn't get to ride or see half of what you wanted!

I start with a map of the park I am visiting and map out the route we will be taking. Read up on each ride or attraction in that area and decide what you want to do, then list them according to how you will walk to them. Another benefit to this is you won't be doing a lot of retracting your path! Saves steps saves feet!

Have a great time at WDW! To me my planning is half the fun and keeps me pumped while I wait for my next visit :goodvibes

IMHO, planning was the key to making our recent trip successful and enjoyable for all. We just returned Sunday, and were able to do all four parks, have afternoon breaks, and not have any meltdowns. My kids are 7 and 3, so we had to not tax them too physically because it was hot. We were at the gates 1/2 hour before opening, so we could get to our first attractions easily. For instance, in MK, we proceeded right the Fantasyland to ride Dumbo, Peter Pan, Pooh, Small World and Teacups before any crowds. If the stand-by line is less than a 15 minute wait, don't waste a fast-pass on that ride. In most cases, you can't get another fastpass until you use the one currently in your possesion. Also, rider swap was great for us, my son could ride all the 40" and above rides twice, and the rider swap pass does not have a time on it so we returned at our leisure, sometimes after our swimming break. As for meals, we had a PS at 8:00 am on our first day at AK. The breakfast was nice and we were already well inside the park, in Dinoland which is perfect for little kids, before the rest of the crowds were there. I planned our trip for last week, partly because I knew the crowds would be less, and we took our 1st grader out of school for 3 days. We never waited more than 20 minutes for any ride. It was perfect.

My husband is a big planner too. We printed out touring plans, which helped us become familiar with the flow of rides in each land. We followed them to some degree, allowing for character stops. Because we arrived early each day, by 2-3 pm we could take a break and go back to hotel for swimming and early dinner, then come back to the parks for the evening. BTW, I agree with the "best days" philosophy of the touring plans, which say you should visit a park the day after EMH.

We rented a car which allowed us so much flexibility and actually ended up paying for itself in the money we saved on souvenirs and food. We made a pit stop at Walmart after the plane landed, stocked up on bottled water, snacks, cereal, milk, etc. We also let the kids buy their souvenirs and squirt bottles there and they never asked for another think in the parks which totally amazed me. We requested a refrigerator in our hotel, and with the exception of our character breakfast, we had breakfast in our room, ate wraps and snacks for late-lunch and dinner and took loads of fruit, water and snacks into the parks each day. It was hot, so no one was really that hungry -- infact I had to force food on the kids during the day and remind them to drink water.

After we put the kids in bed, DH and I would review for the next day and come up with a starting plan. I enjoyed all the planning, and looked at it as helping my kids have the best possible time. DH was reluctant to go because he had heard so many horror stories of 2 hour waiting times and crying kids. It was an accomplishment that it all came off without a hitch.

Hope this helps...enjoy the planning and enjoy the actual time there even more!

Seems we all have our own styles. I have small children and getting to the parks early is a must so we can leave when it is nap time and then go back when it slows again in the afternoon towards dinner time. It took me one trip to prove to hubby that getting there early is a key when we want to do lots of stuff.

I just think you need to let yourself have some breathing room as well. Commando style (not anyones particular ideas here) is what I think leads some families to the "WE ARE SPENDING ALL THIS MONEY - SO BE HAPPY: comments. Underplanning is just as quick to cause this. We try to hit a happy medium.

Dumbo will be our first stop :goodvibes If all works out, we'll be breakfasting at the castle before opening -- making us one of the first on dumbo. Check out the Unofficial Guide's Touring Plans for kids: http://www.touringplans.com/ (more planning pirate:)

The kids in our group range from 4-12. Waiting 45 minutes for dumbo would not be in the 12 year-olds plans, I'm sure. 4 minutes, maybe.

Thank you all, I appreciate the great advice. I do think that TGMike has some great ideas and the days not to go should be followed if you can, but my problem is that this was somewhat of a short notice trip. We only decided in April to go..so about 45 days out and I quick made some PS's without first knowing about the good/bad days and right now we are scheduled to go to MK on a Monday...don't know if I should try to change it up or not.

May be some serious "re-scheduling" in the next 15 days or so! :~)

I agree, planning has made this so much more fun for me and helped the time go by...when we get home I'll probably start on our 2007 trip plans!

Thanks again!

My best friend and I are going to Disney with all but one of my siblings (because he and his DW have a brand new DD!!!) and my parents and my mom's best friend (with her hubby and 3 daughter's) AND her two sister's AND their kids in August!!! We're a little concerned because we know the heat will be intense (8/14-19), so I'm taking extra care to plan, plan, plan!
I haven't been there in 6 years and I've been making lists of all the attractions and shows that each of us (in my family) want to see and trying to figure out a good "plan of attack" for which parks to hit which days.
This thread has been helpful with the suggestion to avoid EMH.
Good luck planning to all of you...am I planning too early?

I combine TGM with UG. Use TGM's advice for which days, and all his insider info, and I have had great success with UG's attraction to attaction map. This allows us to be there early and get all of our must see's out of the way usually before lunch. then we crank it down after lunch. I am some what of a commando...ok, I am a commando. (first step to help is admitting right?)

I have to agree the best advice is to be at park for rope drop. I am going to avoid EMH evenings on our summer trip, and test them out in our fall trip.

happy planning! :goodvibes

I drive my "go with the flow" husband crazy with my planning, but it is all worth it. One great tool I like is the Passporter, simply for organizing my thoughts and getting a good overview of what we want to do each day.

I've also learned that I have to be flexible. When the first member of my party is irritable, it's time to take a break from the schedule, and grab a snack, swim, or nap.

Disney is not going anywhere. You do not have to do everything in one visit. The key is not to be disappointed if you don't get to everything you planned. I want to have more than we can possibly do, so I have a headstart on the plan for our next visit! Having the attitude that "we missed Test Track, so it's at the top of the list next time" will leave you with something to look forward to, and not diminish all the fun you had doing everything you were able to fit in.

Be willing to let your schedule go to fit in some fun time. If you child loves the pool (and many like them better than the parks), be flexible enough to take an afternoon and just enjoy being together.

That said, planning is fun! As long as it stays fun for you, why not pass the time this way?!

Just a few days until I can make my AR for our meals!
