Q about buying additional points

My question to anyone who has done this is, how soon can yu buy additional points? I was told that someone had to wait until there contract was up (10 years). That cannot be true can it?

My example is what if someone bought 150 points initially but then after a year decided that they wanted to upgrade to 200 points. How does the process work?

Any info from people who have done this or know of someone who has done this is apprecitated. Thanks, Scott

I don't believe that you have to wait at all. Just contact your guide(even if you bought through resale just call DVC and they'll have assigned you one--that's what they did with us) and tell them you're interested in adding on points.

I may be wrong on this, so someone please feel free to correct me if I am.:p

I'm not sure where you heard 10 years. All DVC contracts except SSR end in 2042. SSR ends in 2054.

I've seen many members on this board buy add-ons before they even make their first trip!

If you have 150 points and want more, you can see what DVC has to offer. Just talk to your guide. They may actually have all resorts at one time or another in addition to SSR but whether they'll have what you want remains to be seen. You must buy the same use year from DVC for less than 150 points. You could also go resale which could be any resort or use year available but for smaller contracts, should be the same use year as what you own already.

Thanks for the replies. Let me ask another question also:

Can someone add on 50 points a year? My example would be If I have 150 points for 2005, but I want to add on 50 points for 2005 ONLY, can that be done? Or would I have to buy 50 points for the life of the contract? I ask because I may only want to add on certain years NOT for all 50 years.

Hope its not too confusing. Thanks in advance, ScottNBecky

You could potentially add on 50 pts per year but they would all be separate purchases, for resale, you'd be looking at multiple closing costs. You can not just rent extra points for one year from DVC. You could always rent points from a member and have the option of having points transferred into your account subject to the terms of the POS and other member. You could also get some nights cash to make your points go further.

Thanks Dean. I started another thread asking about the cash costs per night. DO you have any idea of what the cost is if I wanted to buy with cash an extra night so I wasnt using my points?

Look on the regular Disney site and select the home away from home resorts then rates. Assume a 25-40% discount for most times of the year, especially if you have or will have an AP or PAP.

Just for clarity, you cannot add on points only for a particular year. You take ownership of a block of points from now until the expiration of the contract in 2042 (most properties) or 2054 (SSR), and you pay annual dues from now until then on all the points you own. Period. If you want extra points for a particular year, you "rent" their one-time use from another member. Right now the going rate for that is about $10/point.
