I work in NYC, so I'm an expert at pushing people back.
But when I was at DL last month, I did have a run-in with a kid at Fantasmic. We had found a spot near New Orleans Square, and this lady dropped her 8/9ish year-old son off to the right of us to save a spot for them while she got food. No big deal.
Next thing I hear is the woman to the right of this kid saying "Excuse me!" I look over and see he was sliding his hands to right, trying to make her move over more and create more space for himself. She looked at me briefly because I think she though he was my kid, but I made it clear he wasn't and the kid eventually stopped (he had ignored all requests to stop).
Then I took a step backward, and I hear a loud "OWWWW!" I had barely stepped on the kid's foot. Barely. But he screeched like I'd chopped it off. I asked him if he was OK, and he glared at me. I thought...he's got to be joking.
"I'm holding a space for my MOM," is all he says to me. This is when I realize this boy has been spread-eagling himself across his spot in an effort to shove people on his sides over more to make room. That's why I wound up stepping on his foot--his legs were so split apart that I probably would have tripped over him if I'd gone any further back.
So I make it clear that we're not planning on moving. Not even for his mom. He goes quiet for a little while, then the sliding starts again. I plant my hand down on the railing so he can't go further.
Then my cell phone rings--it's my mom, returning a call from earlier. I start filling her in on our first day at DL, and then loudly add "We're waiting for Fantasmic now, but we've got this really annoying kid next to us who's going to be in BIG TROUBLE if he keeps sliding into people."
Suddenly all the shoving stops and he goes back to his place. Eventually his mom comes back and takes him to a better spot she found. It was definitely a better spot for all of us once they left.
