Purdue University

Serena's daughter will attend there this fall, and Lanshark is also a Boilermaker alum. . .

:teeth: :teeth: Well, one of the TWO best..... ;)

DS is a senior at Purdue and will graduate (he tells us ;) ) in Computer Engineering in December and plans to stay at Purdue for grad school. He has had a wonderful education there and we are very high on Purdue. Dorm life is pretty good there and they are upgrading many of those facilities as well. West Lafayette is a great college town. Would definitely recommend it....a great value as well. There are some majors, of course, where they would be better that others.

It isn't in a big town, but it's on the main highway between Chicago and Indianapolis. With either city being a couple hours in opposite directions.

DS gets home to Indy in about an hour.

Purdue has a great reputation and is generally respected as a place where the students do study (as opposed to a party school).

Gene Keady is a neighbor and, while is hairdo gets a lot of comment, he has been a great asset for the university and is truly a great person.

The campus is beautiful and has lots of available services without having to travel too far. Purdue has an agreement with the local public transit company, so students can get around easily without a car.

Your child will get a quality education in great surroundings. :)

Coach Keady will definitely be missed when he retires. He is one "intense" coach. I'm trying to remember the year he started at Purdue. I was there from 78 - 82 and I remember him towards the end but not the beginning. Maybe because I was up to 4am every morning at ENAD attempting to get computer projects done the first two years.

We were there at the same time, I started in 77 and graduated in 80. The coach was Lee Rose before Keady and I'm thinking Keady got there for the 80-81 season. Lee Rose took Purdue to the final four in Indy in March 1980. THAT was a great basketball season!

Wow, KarenC and Marcie, we were all there at about the same time!!!!

I was there from 1977 to 1981. Where did you guys live?

I was at McCutcheon (aka "Outer Mongolia") my freshman year -- how I remember trudging through 10 foot snow drifts during the Great Blizzard of 1978 -- uphill both ways, of course ;) )

I was at Earhart my soph and junior years, and my senior year, I moved to Grad House East (I think they are named Young and Hawkins now).

I would echo what many others have said about Purdue. When I was there (granted, it was 23 years ago!!), I always felt very safe. Excellent reputation for academics, particularly in engineering and the sciences. It is a large campus -- I think nearly 30,000 students now, which is fairly typical for Big Ten schools.

Purdue was orginally a land grant college, and as such, also has a strong reputation in agriculture.

No School of Music, BUT there are plenty of oppotunities for students to be involved in the performing arts -- the Purdue All-American Band with its famed "Golden Girl", "Silver Twins", and "Girl in Black" baton squad, Symphony Orchestra, Mens' Glee Club, etc. In fact, one of the most memorable events every year is the PMO Christmas Show, a muscial extravaganza put on jointly by all the musical organizations. And the talent of these young people is amazing!!!

Purdue has a renowned aeronautical engineering program. In fact, at one point, more NASA astronauts graduated from Purdue than any other university (I think Air Force Academy may have that honor now).

Oh, and of course, the athletics. Purdue has a reputation of excellent quarterbacks in football, dating back to Lenny Dawson, Mike Phipps, Bob Griese, Mark Hermann (in my day!), and more recently, Drew Breese. And in basketball, well, for so long, Gene Keady was the embodiment of Purdue Basketball -- much as Bob Knight was his counterpart at Indiana University.

Purdue is in West Lafayette. The West Lafayette/Lafayette (they are separated by the Wabash River) is a mid-size Midwestern town. There is some industry, but at least on the West Lafayette side, it is mostly a college town, with the campus, and some residential areas. Chicago and Indianapolis are both within easy driving distance. If you go a little way off campus, you will be in farmland.

Deb

Looks like you and I were in Earhart the same year. I was in a suite (10 girls in 4 rooms) on the 8th (I think) floor. I was there in 78-79 and then DH and I got married and moved into married student housing over by the airport.

Karen,

Thanks. DH and I never missed a football game but didn't attend basketball games. As I recall we didn't pay for football tickets because they were covered in tuition. I believe we had to pay for basketball.

I lived in one of those suites in McCutcheon in 77-78. Out of those ten girls, I was the only one not from Indiana!

What floor did you live on? I was on the first floor.

I remember trudging through the snow in 1978...and sliding to class after an ice storm. Ah, memories!

Oh, yeah, I remember those "suites" -- Purdue's solution to the housing crisis. Cram 10 people into what was meant for 8 . . .

I was in a double room, on the 3rd floor, I think, of the east side of the dorm.

One of my friends from HS was a CS major. Were you one of those folks carrying around those stacks of computer punch cards? :teeth:

Oh, and those free football tickets were great, weren't they? I remember sitting in the card section one year, where we would have cards of different colors and make various formations with them. I heard they got rid of the free tickets, sadly, and are charging the students now . . .

I think I was on the 8th floor, right outside one of those infamous "suites"!!

Sounds good! :D On "Clean Sweep" a couple weeks ago (it was a repeat), one of the people at the yard sale had on a Chocolate Shop sweatshirt. That was pretty cool (and weird!) to see!!

I was on my back from Chicago, I guess it felt longer than it really was. :D

I'll be making a trip up there next week with Bri. I'm glad it's only an hour. A meeting she has to be in starts at 7:45am. I should be able to make it that morning instead of staying the night before in a hotel.
