Purchasing upgrades?

If you request an upgrade when checking in and there is a cabin available, is the upgrade price

1) a fixed price depending on the category you are currently in and the one you are switching to or
2) calculated based on what you paid and the full price of the category you are going to or
3) some entirely different scheme. If this is it, how is it figured?

I think it's based on the number of categories you are moving up ... i.e. going from cat 8 to cat 7 is a one category move ... but going from cat 8 to cat 4 is a four category move.

When we paid to upgrade at port they pulled out a chart of the pricing of upgrading. It is a graph. It showed catagories on the side and the top of the graph. One just had to pick the cat you started in and the one you wanted to end up in and the price was listed. We were given the option of cat 8 to cat 5 $358 or cat 8 to cat 3 this was an additional $350 approx. So total cost would have been about $708. We chose not to go the the cat 3.

Btw, Disney bumped us to the Cat 8 from a cat 11 at no charge and this had no effect on the cost of getting to a cat 5. The cms each commented on how lucky we were to have been given a free upgrade to cat 8 and how incredible it was to get to a cat 5 for only $358. I only mention this to point out they were aware of the original price we paid and what cat is was.

Good luck!

Don't count on being able to purchase an upgrade. Our cruise was sold out so no upgrades were available. They had a sign at the Guest Services that said "Captain Mickey says the cruise is full" of something like that.

Knowing how my mind works. I will be lucky if I remember to go get my Palo ressie's much less ask for an upgrade. I get too excited about getting on the boat to do anything more than nod when asked questions.

Am I reading those prices right? You could have gone to a cat 3 for another $350 (on top of $708?) What a deal. Hope that's available when we sail.

if you check your cruise online at DCL's website (to see what categories are still available, if any) can you call DCL and get upgraded over the phone? Will the price be the same that you'd pay at the port, or more?

If you upgrade in advance you pay the regular price of the cabin upgrade, as if you did it when you booked.

If you do it at the port, it's "extra" inventory that they would like to sell and fill up. That is why the rates are discounted at the port.

The last 2 cruises we have done the ship has been full so there have been no upgrades available at the port.

ah ok, I was thinking of checking our cruise the night before or morning of (via laptop) to see if any categories still showed available ... thought calling might give me a jump on a discounted upgrade, but if they would still charge the full difference then it would be worth waiting until we reached the terminal to see about a discounted upgrade at check in.

It never hurts to ask! We have a guest that we
know sailing in a couple weeks. She booked a
Cat. 9 and we were all checking and there was
nothing anyone could do.

WELL, we checked again at the beginning of
last week and they are Fla residents and they
had a Fla resident promotion (sometimes there
are other regional promotions and Fla residents
do not get to participate) and she was able
to get a Cat. 6 paying a little bit more and now
she has a BALCONY :)

They are beyond happy!!!

But it can always change, you need to keep
checking.

Dana :)

True story............We had a cat 9 booked on our first sailing (Feb. 2000 Wonder). My DDs, then 9 and 7 saw Titanic the movie and asked "where are we on the ship"? When I showed them the lower part of the ship they said "isn't that where the people were locked in when the ship was sinking"? They didn't want to be there. It was about 5 weeks prior to our sailing, I called DCL and told them my dilema. They gave me an upgrade to a cat. 6 verandah for 100.00 per person. Needless to say I have had to book a verandah for our last 3 sailings!!!!!!
