Purchasing Tickets Over Time

Our family of 4 is going over July 4th. We have 2 adults, a 4 year old and a 2 year old. We are getting 8 day park hopper tickets. We are staying DVC via trading in RCI points so don't have a package. Everything is being purchased individually (dining plan, tickets, memory maker etc.).

We are on a budget so we are having to save up for tickets each month. Has anyone purchased tickets one at a time? Basically I am thinking of purchasing one adult ticket this month, the second next month and the 4 year old ticket in May. Our FP+ window opens in May. If we don't happen to have everyone's tickets by the time our window opens how easy is it to add people to the FP reservation? Does it matter if it is a child or adult being added to a FP reservation in terms of availability?

I have never bought one at a time, but there is no reason why it wouldn't work for you. As far as adding people to FP+ later on...it really will depend on the attraction. It will be much harder to try and add someone to a very popular attraction or meet & greet. It shouldn't matter if it's a child or adult add you're trying to add on. If you're thinking about SDMT or A&E, you would probably be better off trying to make all FP+s at the same time.
Adding PH on later is not a problem at all.

You can purchase tickets whenever you want. If you're buying from disney I doubt you'll run into any problems. If you buy from a discounter I guess you could maybe run into them running out of the specific ticket you want, though doubtful.

As for FP it'll depend on the ride. Some rides will be easy to add, others, like Anna and else or mine train, are doubtful.

You can add hopper option while you're at the parks, just be aware that it's all or nothing. You can add a hopper for just one day (well, you could, but it's the same price as adding to all days).

Add the park hopper later. You want all tickets in hand to book fast passes. If you use a CC to pay buy one now and pay in April. Buy two in April and pay in May. That gives you a little more time to save and pay.

Thanks for the quick responses! We would be purchasing tickets through Disney. How do I add the park hopper later? Do I have to do it at guest services at the parks or can I add it before our trip by calling Disney? Is there a way to add it via the website? Thanks!
